  2. Do-Now: • Have topic sentences out. I will do short writing conferences with each of you and look at these with you during class. • Backtracking a bit: Put into your notes: Two of the many comma rules: • Use commas to separate two FULL SENTENCES that are joined by a conjunction (FANBOY) • The Notre Dame game was over, but the crowd refused to leave. • Use commas after introductory clauses, phrases, and words. • While I was eating breakfast, I checked the weather and saw that it was snowing outside!

  3. Correct or not? Why? • The cat scratched at the door while I was eating. • Yesterday was her brother’s birthday, she took him out to dinner. • Even though she had won the Oscar she was still upset. • She was still quite upset even though she had won the Oscar. • Yesterday was her brother’s birthday but she forgot about it.

  8. Using the outline: • This is a BASIC outline. It may not fit all of your needs. • Some of you may need more paragraphs than are proposed here. If you need to expand on a “section” or write another paragraph about the theme and its development, do this. • Some of you may need more evidence in each paragraph. Do this if you need. • Some paragraphs are not required.

  9. My Sample Outline for Body Paragraph 1: Topic Sentence: Characterization shows people turn against each other. . . Text Evidence: Quote about how Dylan says the family is weird (p. 92) . . Explanation: Dylan points fingers, makes people afraid. Fear leads to accusations to keep blame away. . . Conclusion: Dylan at the root of problem/shows theme. .

  10. Outlines: • Ms. Stitt will call you up to do a mini 2-3 minute conference with her about your thesis statement and topic sentences. • While she is conferencing with students, this is your time to work on finding evidence in the text as support (due as a standard on Monday):
