  8. So what?!?! • Glad you asked….. • Canada has two recognized national languages. • English • French • Canada has a very rich and diverse cultural make up • Many believe this has led to Canada being a very progressive and accepting nation

  9. United States of America

  10. Early influences • Indigenous peoples • Again numerous European nations explored and settled in the United States, however, three had the biggest influence / territories. • Great Britain • France • Spain

  11. What in the world is happening?!

  12. English influence • Well, we do speak English, or a version of it. • We jacked most of our constitution from English documents or philosophies • Magna Carta • Bill of Rights • John Locke

  13. French Influence • Louisiana, home of the Rajun Cajuns! • This explains why LSU spells Go Tigers, Geaux Tigers

  14. Spanish influence • Numerous forts / missions across, Florida, the Southwest and the West coast. • Texans be like….. • Spain be like…… “yea, we built it.”

  15. Questions… • In what ways has cultural convergence taken place between Great Britain and the United States? • What impact did the French have on our culture today? • In what ways did Spain impact the United States?

  16. More cultural influences • Think of how the following groups immigrated to the United States and the impact it had on the cultural make up and convergence occurring in the country • Get with a partner and provide examples of how four of the following has impacted the United States • African • Irish • Germans • Russians • Chinese • Japanese • Mexicans

  17. African American Influence • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjZa7lyyGlw • Jazz • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwXwv9tpLGA • Even today jazz, the blues, r&b and hip hop have played vital roles in the b-boy culture.

  18. More Cultural Influences • The United States resettles more refugees than any other nation

  19. Refugees into the U.S. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17p5UcaiJAs • Watch the clip above • Why are refugees coming to the United States, what difficulties are they having? Why do some want to go back?

  20. Latin America Early influences • Indigenous people • Portugal • Spain

  21. Influences of Portugal • Brazil speaks Portuguese • Religion • Architecture • Art

  22. Spain’s Influence • Language • Religion • Architecture • Sports • Futbol

  23. Slaves in South America • More slaves from Western Africa were forced to South America than in any where else in the world.

  24. Influence of slaves in South America • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vfjs0ga0ec • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lglU5hF22Io • Think……. In what ways did African culture have an impact on the style of music, dance and martial arts? • Capoeira combined African music and dance and was combined with native music and dance to create a new art. Slaves were not allowed to learn how to fight / so they disguised capoeira as a dance. • Cumbias incorporated African percussion instruments with indigenous forms of dance

  25. Latin America continued • Needless to say, South America has an extremely rich and diverse culture • It’s impossible to look at modern day culture in South America and not see the combined aspects of Europe, indigenous people and African cultures • Look at the sports, religion, dance, food and language of the region. They’re all combined from other cultures.
