  2. What is geography? • Geography is a way of looking at the world. A way of discovering not just where things are but why they are there.

  3. The Five Themes of Geography • Location • Place • Human/Environment Interaction • Movement • Regions Geographers ask questions about these themes in order to understand the world around them

  4. Location • Where is it? • Position on the earth’s surface • Two types of location: • Exact or Absolute • Relative

  5. Exact Location • Absolute or Exact • Example: Street Address Challenger M.S. 10215 Lexington Dr.. Colo. Spgs., CO 80920

  6. A general location Example: Denver is north of Colorado Springs Relative Location

  7. Place • What is it like there? • Physical and Human Characteristics of a location

  8. Human/Environment Interaction • “What is the relationship between humans and their environment?” • Adapt, change or modify their environment

  9. Movement • “How and why are places connected with one another?” • Mobility of people, goods and ideas

  10. Regions • “How and why is one area similar to another?” • Areas that share similar characteristics
