  3. Structural Classifications • Fibrous • No joint cavity • Bones held together by fibrous C. T. • Cartilaginous • No joint cavity • Bones held together by cartilage • Synovial • Joint cavity present • Bones held together by articular capsule

  4. Functional Classifications • Synarthrosis • Immovable joint • Ex: skull sutures, teeth in jaw • Amphiarthrosis • Slightly moveable joint • Ex: between vertebrae, distal articulation of tibia and fibula • Diarthrosis • Freely moveable joint • Ex: knee, hip, elbow

  5. Diarthrosis Joints • Gliding • Flat surface of bones • Side-to-side and back-and-forth movements • Ex: bones in foot

  6. Diarthrosis Joints • Hinge • Fit together • Movement is mainly in one direction • Ex: elbow, knee

  7. Diarthrosis Joints • Pivot • Rounded bone fits with ring formed by other bone and ligament • Rotational movement allowed • Ex: ulna and radius

  8. Diarthrosis Joints • Ellipsoidal • Oval shaped condyle of bone fits into cavity of another bone • Side-to-side and back-and-forth movement • Ex: wrist

  9. Diarthrosis Joints • Saddle • One bone’s surface is saddle shaped while other is rider shaped • Ex: thumb

  10. Diarthrosis Joints • Ball-and-socket • Ball-like surface of one bone fits into cuplike surface of other • Allows full movement • Ex: shoulder and hip
