  1. Bay Ridge Security Consulting (BRSC) Cloud Computing

  2. What is Cloud Computing • Provides everything: computing power, computing infrastructure, applications, business processes, personal collaboration, as a service to a user wherever and whenever they may need • Definition from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) • Model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort of service provider interaction • Pay-per-use computing model in which customers pay only for computing resources they need

  3. What is Cloud ComputingCont. • Potentially growing to a revolutionary concept that could dramatically impact all areas of the IT world • Network design • Applications • Procedures • Personnel • May even come down to distinguishing computing as “pre-cloud” and “post-cloud” • Could be defined as set of hardware, networks, storage, services, and interfaces combined to deliver aspects of computing as a service.

  4. How Cloud Computing can be Used • Stores data, applications, software, and services on group of computers that act as equipment to deliver software and data to end user. • Allows businesses or users to remotely manage, store, customize software or services from any device with Internet access • Businesses can meet with clients from all over the world in real time video • Employees can work from home with access to all business related software, documents, information

  5. Characteristics of Cloud Computing • On-demand self-service • Users can automatically increase or decrease their resources with out having any human interaction from a service provider • Universal client support • Any network device such as desktop, laptop, smartphone, or tablet can access the cloud for resources • Invisible resources pooling • Resources pooled together to serve multiple, simultaneous consumers dynamically assigned or reassigned according to their needs. Customers have no control/knowledge or physical location of resources.

  6. Characteristics of Cloud Computing cont. • Immediate elasticity • Computing resources can be increased or decreased quickly to meet demands • Metered services • Fees based on the computing resources used by consumer • Storage • Less expensive • Off-site location • Increase office space and hard drive space

  7. Cloud Computing Service Models • Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS) • The cloud computing vendor provides access to the vendor’s software application running on a cloud infrastructure • Application software belongs to vendor providing the cloud service • Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) • Consumer can install and run their own specialized applications on the cloud computing network • Customer controls deployment of applications, but do not manage/configure any underlying cloud infrastructure (network, servers, operating systems, storage)

  8. Cloud Computing Service Models cont. • Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) • Cloud computing vendor lets the customer deploy and run the customer’s own software including operating systems and application • Customer has the highest level of control • Customer has some control over operating system, storage, and installed applications, but can not manage or control underlying cloud infrastructure

  9. Importance of Cloud Computing • Helps in business applications and functionality and usages of computer software • Services, applications, data, and other resources available from any device with Internet access. (easy access from anywhere at any time) • Helps financially • Don’t have to buy cable services with monthly fee • Less equipment need to purchase • Better tracking of activities • Stop technological disasters • Data loss • Virus • System crashes

  10. Importance of Cloud Computing cont. • Easy to share huge amounts of data, software, applications between business offices • Easy access to office data, information to those traveling • Services not interrupted • Saves time • Faster and quicker to solutions helps reduce business risks • Still evolving and will only enhance opportunities for the business.
