  2. Definition • A military expedition to recover the Holy Land (Jerusalem) from Muslims

  3. The Beginning • Pope Innocent III comes to power • Preaches of a fourth crusade • Not taken seriously by other monarchs • Fulk convinced everyone

  4. A Fourth Crusade • Originally set out for Egypt • Went to Venice for aid • Venetians provide ships for transport • Created large debt for crusaders to Venice

  5. The Turn • Venice demands more money than can be paid by crusaders • In place of money, asked to attack Zara (another Catholic city) • Zara, once controlled by Venice, now under protection of King Emeric of Hungary • Many opposed and left • Pope Innocent III threatened excommunication

  6. New Agenda • Crusaders attack Zara and pay off debt • Pope Innocent III excommunicate all who participated, including all Venetians • Still don’t go to Egypt

  7. Another Twist • Alexius Angelus wants throne back • Strikes deal with crusaders • Offers money, and to join the crusade against Egypt • Asked for them NOT to damage city • Crusaders agree to attack Constantinople

  8. TakingConstantinople • When crusaders reached, they were made to camp outside • Got tired of waiting and attacked • Former emperor fled with a lot of the city’s wealth • Alexius melted down valuable Byzantine and Roman icons to use their gold and silver in order to pay the crusaders

  9. Angry People • People saw melting of icons as a crimeagainst God • FeltAlexius should be punished • Strangled him to death

  10. Out Come • The crusaders never reach the Holy Land • Gain more enemies than before • Go home excommunicated and empty handed
