  4. Tide Notes

  5. Tides Learning Target: I can differentiate between High and Low tides and how often they occur. I can name at least 2 location where you can see tides happening everyday. I can work cooperatively with my partner to determine what causes tides. I can illustrate Spring and Neap tides. I can determine that Spring tides have NOTHING to do with the seasons.

  6. Tides: The rising of Earth’s ocean surface caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun acting on the oceans.

  7. Tides: The rising of Earth’s ocean surface caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun acting on the oceans.

  8. Brain check • Think to yourself, what causes tides? • With your shoulder partner, discuss what you think causes tides. • What is the difference between a tide and a wave?

  9. The Sun and Moon both exert a gravitational pull on Earth. What is the main dominate force behind the tides? Moon’s gravity Why is the Moon’s tidal affect larger? The Moon is closer to the Earth

  10. Lunar or Moon Tide Moon’s gravity pulls on the Earth, and pulls the water towards it. The water moves up into a slight bulge on the side of the Earth that faces the moon. At the same time, water on the opposite side of Earth bulges due to the motion of the Earth and the Moon around each other.

  11. Moon Tide The bulges are called high tide. Water is drawn away from the area between high tides creating low tides

  12. Moon Tide Earth’s rotation and the moon's orbit around the Earth determine when tides occur. Tides occur at different spots on Earth because Earth rotates more quickly than the moon revolves around Earth. It takes 24 hours and 50 minutes for a spot on Earth to rotate and face the moon again. Therefore, high and low tides occur about 50 minutes later each day http://my.hrw.com/sh/h8x/0030665892/student/ch20/sec03/qc02/h8x20_03_q02fs.htm

  13. Brain check • How many high tides per day? Why?

  14. Two high tides and two low tides per day EQUALS one tidal cycle per day.

  15. Tidal Range: The difference in the levels of ocean water at high and low tide. http://my.hrw.com/sh/h8x/0030665892/student/ch20/sec03/qc01/h8x20_03_q01fs.htm

  16. HIGH and low Tides: In one rotation (1 day) the moon : 1. Starts over _____________ 2. 6 hours later _____________ 3. another 6 hrs (12 hrs)__________ 4. another 6 hrs.(18 hrs) _______ 5. returns to point of origin (24hrs) ____ Galveston Island Middle of Pacific (West of Hawaii) Sri Lanka Ghana Africa Galveston Island

  17. Castle Mont-St.-Michel This is small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France near Normandy. The tides surrounding the “Mount” can vary by 14 meters between high and low tides, and may move in as rapidly as 1 meter per second. The “Mount” is connected to the mainland by a thin natural land bridge, which before modernization was covered by the sea at high tide, and revealed during the low tide.

  19. Brain Check 24 hours and 50 minutes The time of the rotation of the Earth with respect to the Moon • Think to yourself, what is the length of a tidal day? • Answer the following question: • If high tide is at 12pm today, give the time to expect it tomorrow?____ 12:50pm

  20. What’s the difference between a Spring Tide and a Neap Tide?

  21. SPRING TIDES • Spring tides have big differences between high and low tide. • They have NOTHING to do with the seasons! • EXTRA HIGH TIDES and very low tides.

  22. SPRING TIDES • They occur when the EarthSunMoon are in a straight line. Spring tides occur during the FULL moon And the NEW moon phases. The gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun both contribute to the tides. Which creates the maximum tidal range

  23. SPRING Tides produce LARGER tides (bulge) because the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun are combined.

  24. SPRING TIDES

  25. NEAP TIDES • Neap tides are especially weak tides. You can’t see a real difference in HIGH and low tides. • The Moon and Sun are perpendicular to each. • The Earth, Moon and Sun form right angles. Neap tides occur during 1st & 3rd QUARTER Moon phases. Gravitational pull from The Moon & Sun cancel each other out, creating a Minimumal tidal range)

  26. In a NEAP Tide, the Sun and Moon are opposing, creating a smaller bulge, thus a smaller tide.

  27. NEAP TIDES

  30. The rising and falling tide can create strong tidal currents.

  31. Where is the strongest/most dangerous tidal current?

  32. Where is the strongest/most dangerous tidal current? The answer is………

  33. Where is the strongest/most dangerous tidal current?

  34. Woods Hole, Massachusetts is famous for it’s fast moving tides-Note it’s location.
