Relevant Eye Safety Standards for Consideration

This submission suggests two apparently relevant eye safety standards, ANSI/IESNA.RP-27.1-05 and IEC 62471 (CIE S009), for consideration in wireless personal area networks (WPANs) to ensure optical radiation hazards are evaluated and controlled.

Chau, Boston University ANSI/IESNA RP-27.1-05 • “Photobiological Safety for Lamps and Lamp Systems-General Requirements” • From its abstract:This Recommended Practice covers the evaluation and control of optical radiation hazards from all electrically powered sources of optical radiation that emit in the 200 nm through 3,000 nm (3.0 æm) range except for lasers and for light emitting diodes (LEDs) used in optical fiber communication systems. • VLC is not a type of optical fiber communication, so this recommended practice applies.

Chau, Boston University IEC 62471 (CIE S009) • “Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems” • From its abstract:Specifically it specifies the exposure limits, reference measurement technique and classification scheme for the evaluation and control of photobiological hazards from all electrically powered incoherent broadband sources of optical radiation, including LEDs but excluding lasers, in the wavelength range from 200 nm through 3000 nm.
