  2. DIRECT METAL LASER SINTERING (DMLS) Dentistry is undergoing technological advancements at a fast rate. DIRECT METAL LASER SINTERING (DMLS) is one of the imported technologies for casting metal crowns. It is a manufacturing process for producing complex 3D components directly from 3D CAD data without using any machining. Not only for crowns it is also used in the area of dental bridges. To fabricate the desired frame by selectively sintering the alloy powder layer by layer, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data is used.

  4. PROCESS • The process starts in the dental lab by making an impression of the teeth after routine diagnosis and treatment planning. Impression can be taken by conventional technique or as digital impressions. After that, the impression is cast and a model is prepared. The next step is to scan the model and the crown is designed using routine diagnosis and treatment planning. The central processing unit usually will be a remotely located laboratory with laser sintering equipment. For importing CAD files special CAM software is used. It is usually supplied in the STL format from a scanner/CAD software. This software slices the parts into discrete horizontal layers.

  5. If there are sufficient numbers of crown copings and bridge framework, the laser starts production layer by layer by taking only a few hours. Metal powder is spread over the working platform. Here, a high-powered laser beam is used for the purpose of melting the bed of metal alloy powder. It was done by following a predetermined path layer by layer and this path is created by a CAD file. The machine can produce a lot of dental prostheses out of metal powder. The speed taken for the process is approximately 3 min/crown.

  6. Actually, the DMLS process is done by two different methods. The difference is in the way each layer of powder is applied. (a) Powder Deposition (b) Powder Bed Method

  7. The powder bed method is the most popular method. It offers faster speed. We can see two platforms inside the build chamber area. The two platforms are the material dispensing platform and build platform. In material dispensing platform material dispensing platform. A focused laser beam is used to fuse the metal powder into a solid part by melting it in the laser beam. And the parts are built up additively layer by layer. After building a layer, the build piston lowers the build platform. After that, the next layer of powder is applied. This complete process allows for highly complex geometries. It is to be created directly from 3D CAD data. Everything is happening fully automatically without any tools.

  8. CONCLUSION DMLS PFM is a PFM material having a 10 years warranty. It is the newest technology in metal manufacturing. DMLS is a type of metal ceramic crown. The metal part of the DMLS is fabricated by a laser sintering machine. By using the DMLS, Custom-fit, strength, and long-term durability are quickly available. The integration of the DMLS implant was functionally and aesthetically satisfactory after 1 year of follow-up. Also, there is no bone resorption or soft tissue recessions. By using. We can fabricate titanium dental implants with DMLS, with an inherently porous surface. It is a key property required of implantation devices.
