Founded in Texas in 1959 Dr. Stephen Youngberg and Mr. Walter Tynes Operations started in Mexico late 1950’s Honduras chosen because of high poverty rate Operations in Honduras started in 1960 Honduran Government supportive Servicio Pan Americano de Salud began in 1963

  3. Lago Yojoa • In the mountains of Northwestern Honduras • In Peña Blanca, Cortes since November 1960 • Clinic work began in February 1961 • Illnesses associated with poverty: • Malnutrition • Parasites & Diarrhea • Respiratory Infections • Skin Conditions • Mortality 2nd to Childhood Diseases

  4. Childhood Malnutrition a Deadly, Preventable Disease • Aha! Moment: “Doctor if I could feed by child … he wouldn’t be sick.” • February 1965 – three children admitted severely malnourished were the first Nutrition Rehabilitation Hospital patients • Two died and one lived • Within 3 months 100 patients • Today there are 19 patients

SPAS Children’s Home • Today there are 75children and teens • Children abandoned in Nutritional Rehab • Scarce resources at home • One parent household or orphaned • One less mouth to feed • Transportation difficulties • “Better off with El Doctor” • Given the security of a family style setting • Kept in the Home until finished with education • Some parents return after many years • Promotes confidence in parents to use Nutritional Rehab service

Education • Education • Breaking the cycle of poverty • Mothers with at least 4th grade education – rarely have malnourished children. • Fathers better able to provide • Love and Security • Success of SPAS • In spite of malnourished state in early childhood they are able to succeed in life • Some offspring have outstanding academic achievement • Early intervention increases academic ability

Tips from Successful Partnerships • Rigorous practice of cultural sensitivity • Practice of professional courtesy • Recognizing peace and humility are cherished traits • Reaching out to leaders in the community • Intentionally pursuing opinion of thought leaders • Collaboration with Government entities • Health Centers • Mayors • Schools
