  1. Parent Focus Group Monday 18th November

  2. Progress Update External validation of the school • No further involvement from HMI as yet • 2 visits from our York Challenge Partner to review progress against the plan and standards. • I meeting with Assistant Director (HT andCoG) and another planned for Dec 6th. • 1 day a week with Partner Headteacher.

  3. Reading • Whole staff training on Reading • New Guided Reading Carousels • New planning format • New reading diaries • Focus on developing and strengthening independent work in particular • Monitoring of teaching • Sharing of best practice • Monitoring of pupil’s books • Staffing of the library • Revised guidelines Impact • Raised Profile • Consistency of approach • 2 levels progress data was above national (97% v 88%) • Phonics results were much stronger than last year (up 30%) and were above national (76% v 69%) . The Y2 recheck was also above national (93% v 69%) Next Steps • We need to raise our expectations even higher, so that we increase the number of children who make greater than expected progress (currently 25% v 30% nationally)

  4. Presentation • Reviewed our guidelines • Increased expectations shared with pupils • Introduced a consistent approach to use of books • Monitoring of books to ensure consistency • Introduced a new Handwriting Scheme Impact • Greater consistency across school • Improving standards of presentation

  5. Marking and Feedback • Reviewed our policy • Introduced consistent approach to quality marking (highlight 2 or 3 ‘successful’ things in green and 1 improvement in orange.)in literacy. • Children are given time to respond to improvement prompts. • From Y2 onwards, two or three appropriate spellings are also picked up. • Introduced detailed marking in Maths – children asked to correct errors or complete an extension question. • Consistency checked through regular monitoring of books. Impact • Consistency across school Next steps Would parents find it helpful to have policies such as these on the VLE?

  6. Other Issues Staffing • Have appointed new Y3 teacher and arranged for her to come in 2 days before Christmas. • Have appointed Mrs Fox’ maternity cover – is currently doing supply in her class and I’ve arranged for 2 days for Mrs Fox and him to work together. • New Admin member of staff • Mrs Brooks, one of our TAs, is now opening the library up 2 hours outside of class time. • Where there has been exceptional levels of supply cover I have informed those classes. VLE We are about to change providers for our school website. The new provider promises to be more user friendly so this will hopefully assist with communication – anything Parents would like on the new website that isn’t currently on ours? The Parent Focus Group I’m keen to keep all parents in the loop, so I’ve communicated through the school newsletters to date. We need to decide how we communicate minutes etc.

  7. Pupil Progress Currently • Reading Diaries contain reading targets • Within class, we use next step sheets for Writing and Maths. • Children are in the ‘99’ club – weekly check on their number bonds/tables – Mr Laycock is currently providing some parental guidance on this. • Homework – spelling, reading books, number facts and independent work. • Parents’ consultations in the Autumn and Spring Term and a school report in the Summer Term, which states whether children are working at below, in line with or above expected levels. • SEN pupils have an Individual Education Plan with targets. For Consideration • A consistent reporting mechanism for Parent Consultations – a written sheet with the child’s current level and target/next step on. This could also form part of the end of year report so that parents have a termly update. • What else would parents value – workshops, booklets, information on the VLE?

  8. Next Steps Topic for our next meeting • Homework • Communication • SEN • Spelling Any other issues? Date of Next Meeting? w/b 13thJan (not 14th or 16th) or w/b 20th Jan (not 23rd)
