  3. What is an Extended Essay? • A research project. • In one of your six subjects. • On a topic chosen by you but with advice from your teacher. • On work which may relate to your syllabus but which goes beyond it. • Carried out between now and October. • Resulting in a 4000 word academic paper.

  4. How do you start? Think of a topic • Your favourite subject? • Your career plan, e.g. medicine, business? • An interest e.g. photography, art? • Family connections, e.g. business, history.

  5. Then consult • Teachers • Personal Tutor • Family • Friends • Year 2s • Old essays in the Library • Library staff

  6. And sort out • Applied topics are often better than theoretical ones e.g. Applied chemistry. • A provisional research question and .... • A supervisor – usually your teacher in the subject that you choose. • Research methods – the Library, home resources, the Internet, etc.

  7. Then ...... • Research • Primary Sources • Process your results • Draft • Draft • Completed essay • Hand in • Plan - Do not spend too long on any part.

  8. Tips - 1 • Planning is two thirds of the secret. • Research is three quarters of the time. • Find a preliminary topic / research question NOW. • Start research as soon as you have a Research Question. • Use your Supervisor.

  9. Tips - 2 • Be realistic – GO FOR A TIGHTLY DEFINED TOPIC AND READILY ACCESSIBLE SOURCES. • Keep an eye on the Criteria – both general and subject specific. • Enjoy it!!!!

  10. What happens then? • Supervisor – final read through. • Viva • Fill in form together. • Send to IB for grading. • Results on A – E scale.

  13. Subject choice • Best (by far) in one of the student’s six subjects • Best in one of their HL subjects • Best in a subject that they are hoping to study at university • Often concentrated in Group 3 subjects

Implementation • Use the Extended Essay Guide • One of IB’s best documents • Very helpful on: • The role of the supervisor • The responsibility of the student • The criteria, and • The interpretation of the criteria • International-mindedness: should be there if possible, but ……. can be difficult

  15. Timeframe • Experienced schools generally run it from Jan / Feb of the first academic year through to Oct / Nov of the same calendar year. (May session schools.) • Students can use the summer for research / external lab work (if required) / writing a draft.

Some good titles • Biology: How are the distribution and growth of lichens affected by sulfur dioxide and ozone levels in the atmosphere? • Economics: To what extent did Matav, a Hungarian telecommunications company, become more efficient post-privatization? • English (First language): “What are the role and the significance of dance in Pride and Prejudice and Emma?”

More titles • English or French or German (First language): “In what different ways do Shaw, Anouilh and Schiller present Joan of Arc in their respective plays?” • History: To what extent were Hitler’s educational aims fulfilled in the Uhland Gymnasium, 1937–1939? • Japanese (Second language): Does Japanese need new words to describe non-traditional family relationships as society changes?

And more ..... • Maths: How many square numbers are also triangular numbers, where are they, and what other problems lead to Pell’s equation? • Physics: Is the efficiency of electromagnetic damping of a moving glider a function of the initial kinetic energy of the glider? • Spanish (second language): To what extent have differences between formal and informal usage disappeared from the language used in the Rio de la Plata region? • Visual arts: “An analysis of African influences on Henry Moore” (Extended Essay Guide)

  20. Some bad essays • Russian A1 – A survey of the work of Leo Tolstoy • Too general – too descriptive – insufficiently analytical • History - The causes of the first world war • Far too general! • History - How did Hitler come to power? • Still too general • Economics – The impact of the recession • Too vague

And .... • Chemistry - How accurate the Avogadro constant is.’ (sic) • Too general • Chemistry – Biodiesel • Too general, too tired! • Theatre – Shakespeare’s contribution to drama • Far too general! • Maths - A proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. • Actually, if a student did achieve this in 4000 words they would be in line for all kinds of awards, so one just has to say – too implausible.

  22. To finish ...... • One of the most exciting and satisfying experiences that a teacher can have is to supervise a successful extended essay.
