  1. Hardware Status and Plans of theEmbedded Local Monitor Board ATLAS DCS Workshop 2-3 Oct 2000

  2. Introduction There is a need for a general-purpose Detector Front-End I/O Control System which can be embedded in the detectors. • to monitor voltages, currents, temperatures, .. • to control power supplies, cooling system, ... • to read and write status bits • to check in-system programmable devices via serial control e.g. JTAG and I2C ATLAS DCS Workshop 2-3 Oct 2000

  3. Introduction to ELMB ATLAS DCS Workshop 2-3 Oct 2000

  4. Development of the ELMB is motivated by • Radiation Problems • Total Ionising Dose TID CMOS MUX • Non-Ionising Energy Loss NIEL Optocouplers • Single Even Effects SEE Memory bit errors • Magnetic Field (1.5T to 0.1T) DC-DC converters • Access restriction - should work 24h and 365 days/year • I/O points distributed over the whole detector volume <100m • Standardised connections to the SCADA Hardware: CANbus / LAN Software: CANopen, OPC, TCP/IP ATLAS DCS Workshop 2-3 Oct 2000

  5. and furthermore... • Reduced design effort by individual institutes • Common Open Embedded Software • templates, libraries • Spares and maintence during the detector lifetime (15 years) • Low power consumption • cables, local power supplies • Commercial low cost • in ATLAS several thousands will be needed • Common effort • People from many subdetectors involved in HW and SW.
