  2. Enhanced EVAP Phase-in 2 1996 ----- 20% 1997 ----- 40% 1998 ----- 90% 1999 ---- 100% Gas Caps? Manufacturers with sales less than 10,000 vehicles per year are exempt until 1999 when 100% compliance is required.

  3. The typical non-enhanced EVAP system contains the following components: • EVAP emission pressure control valve. • Vented canister. • Diagnostic switch • EVAP purge solenoid. 3 Do you see the words “Gas Cap” here?

  4. The Enhanced EVAP System uses the following components: Evaporative system canister. Fuel tank pressure sensor. Canister purge solenoid. Canister vent solenoid. Service port. Fuel cap. Fuel level sensor. 4 Do you know anybody that has changed a gas cap?

  5. 5 Who Is Using Smoke Technology EVAP Machines? Using an EVAP-approved smoke machine isn’t just recommended, it’s now required by DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Land Rover, Saab and Saturn. More approvals are pending.

  6. CHECK ENGINE $ 6 $ PO499 PO442 PO446 PO444 PO451 $ $ PO449 P2422 $ PO455 Let’s put the numbers to work for you! $ PO469 $ $ $ $ P2026 $ $ PO456 $ PO440 PO453 P0442 P0456 Are EVAP codes something that happen often?

  7. The right tool for the top three most common Codes Top 10 DTCs in Vehicles with Less Than 75,000 Miles (CA) 7 • P0171 8.88% System too lean -- Bank 1 • P1443 7.45% Ford EVAP Control Valve Failure • P0455 7.16% Gross EVAP Leak • P0135 5.44% O2 Sensor Heater Circuit • P0141 5.16% O2 Sensor Heater • P0301 5.16% Misfire Cylinder #1 • P0300 4.30% Random Misfire • P0420 4.30% Low Catalyst Efficiency – Bank 1 • P0134 3.44% O2 Sensor No Activity • P0340 3.44% Camshaft Pos. Sensor Malfunction This information is from the Clean Air Conference 2002 Breckenridge, Colorado

  8. 8 Unlike traditional general-purpose smoke machines, the EVAP-approved units use an inert gas like Nitrogen for testing the EVAP systems. Where can you get a Nitrogen tank ? WWW.PRAXAIR.COM 800-PRAXAIR ( 772-9247) Enter Zip Code How Long Will A Tank Last ? 300 cu-ft. = 300 5-Minutes Tests You can use shop air for all general purpose leak testing.

  9. 9 Do you sell this with the 6285 LeakTamer? Why not?

  10. 10 Caution Must remove core and DON’T LOOSE IT ! Clockwise to remove Put smoke supply hose in good and tight Now we are ready to find leak(s)

  11. Intake Manifold 11 Disconnect the hose between the Purge Valve and Charcoal Canister, at or as close as you can to the Purge Valve. Insert the EVAP tester supply line into the hose that is going to the Charcoal Canister. Close “Canister Vent Valve” and continue testing the system. Purge Valve No EVAP test port? This test is done with key on engine off Charcoal Canister Canister Vent Valve Fuel Tank Canister Vent Valve When smoke is put into the EVAP system (Canister Close Valve is closed) there should NOT be any smoke exiting the Canister Close Valve. This test procedure doesn’t test from the Purge Valve back to the engine.

  12. Caution 12 The EVAP system is NOT to be tested with more than 13” of Water Column (less than 1/2psi). The OE-approved machines have a built-in regulator to handle this task. General purpose smoke machines can produce 3 to 5 times more pressure than recommended by the manufacturers. Over pressuring the system can and will cause damage! Look at the tag on the service port 1psi Max

  13. Observe reading after ball stops descending TEST SMOKE Future .040’’ FAIL / ÉCHEC / FALLA .020’’ PASS / SUCCÈS / PASE 13

  14. Fail Pass The power of Quantifying 14 PO442 = .040”(Small Leak)PO456 = .020”(Very Small Leak) OE-approved EVAP machines have the ability to quantify both PO442 & PO456 codes and give you a pass / fail test in less than 2 minutes Example: Select the setting of .040” or .020” and adjust the red flag to calibrate to that setting. Put the unit in the test mode and push the remote button. With the canister vent valve closed, wait for the ball to stop descending. If the ball stops above the red flag, the leak(s) are greater than calibrated.

  15. CHECK ENGINE Lets add it up ! P0442 P0456 • P0171 8.88% System too lean -- Bank 1 • P1443 7.45% Ford EVAP Control Valve Failure • P0455 7.16% Gross EVAP Leak OE approved + Check Engine Lights + Top 3 Codes + To Quantify+ Best Value + THE ONLY WAY =
