  2. Adolescence • Adolescence: The period between the normal onset of puberty and the beginning of adulthood. • Puberty: The physical maturing that makes an individual capable of sexual reproduction. • In American society, adolescence is generally considered to run from the ages of 12 to 19.

  3. The concept of Adolescence • Relative recent phenomenon. Did not exist before the Civil War. • Before that time, young people were treated simply as small adults. • The adolescent experience has become an acknowledged stage of development in industrialized countries in only the past century.

  4. The concept of Adolescence • Three factors have been particularly important in the development of adolescence as a distinct life stage in the United States. • Education • Exclusion of youth from the labor force. • Development of the juvenile justice system.

  5. Characteristics of Adolescence • Biological growth and development. • Undefined status. • Increased decision making. • Increased pressures. • The search for self.
