  1. Evidence-based decision making What’s the role of DME?

  2. Why? • Information helps to make better decisions • Evidence tells us what is working or not • Analysis increases understanding of ‘why’ • Recommendations can influence priorities • Actions taken can improve programming for child well-being

  3. Bad data = bad decisions

  4. Evidence badly communicated is useless…

  5. And too much information does not help…

  6. How do leaders make better decisions? • Having a ‘Big picture’ view • Honest and timely, information flow • Clear line management and accountability Using evidence-base for decision making

  7. 1. Getting the ‘Big picture’ • Strategy is based on evidence • Thresholds for action are known • Progress on key indicators is presented regularly • Including CWB Targets • Contextual information provides a reality check • With analysis and recommendations

  8. 2. Honest and timely, information flow • Evidence is presented at the right time to leaderships • Standard indicators agreed and tracked • Including CWB Targets • Data is consistent and quality is assured • Data is analysed • Information is demanded by leadership and used

  9. 3. Clear line management DME lead or evaluation unit responsible for: • Standardisation of measurement • Data quality • Cross-programme analysis • Information flows to leadership • Reporting on CWB

  10. Utilizing evidence base for learning and change • Information can be viewed in real time by key staff • Recommendations for improvements or adaptation agreed with partners and communities • SLT act on appropriate recommendations • Successful programming identified and used as learning sites for others • The success factors that enabled CWB are analysed and replicated where appropriate

  11. Better programme level decision making in DME

  12. Better decisions ‘D’ • Assessment • Design • Baseline

  13. Better information flow ‘M’ • Collect and analyse • Share and discuss • Adapt plans

  14. Better evidence base ‘E’ • Clear results chain • Reliable data • Standard measures reflect baseline • Understanding of what ‘worked’ • What change is needed for child well-being?

  15. Using evidence for programme effectiveness Programme manager + staff and partners ADAPT Senior Leadership Team ADAPT Field level DME National office DME National office systems
