  2. Toxic shock syndrome Toxic shock syndrome was first found in children in 1978.However, toxic shock syndrome did not become familiaruntil an epidemic in 1981, linked to women using tampons. Most doctors will never even see a case in their career. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare, life threatening illness that is caused by toxins (poisons) that circulate in the bloodstream. Bacteria that have infected some part of the body release these toxins.

  3. Toxic shock syndrome Anyone can get TSS, in fact a third of all cases are men. Women will most likely get it from using a superabsorbent tampon but you can also get it from a burn, or cut, or even after you have surgery.

  4. Toxic shock syndrome Researchers have not figured out exactly how tampons may cause toxic shock syndrome. Some believe that when superabsorbent tampons are left in place for a long time, the tampons become a place for bacteria to live off of. Others have suggested that the superabsorbent fibers in the tampons can scratch the surface of the vagina, making it possible for bacteria or their toxins to enter the bloodstream.

  5. Symptoms • Sudden high fever greater than 102°F • Sunburn like rash all over your body • Low blood pressure • Nausea or vomiting • Abdominal pain • Lightheadedness or fainting • Muscle aches

  6. Toxic shock syndrome Treatment People with suspected toxic shock syndrome should be immediately taken to the hospital's emergency department. • Placed in ICU department • Start IV for antibiotics and to raise blood pressure • Provide oxygen if needed • Look for any other possible source of infection Medications • Nafcillin • Oxacillin • Penicillin • Clindamycin Medication to raise blood pressure if low • Dopeamine • Epinephrine
