  3. Let’s play a game! • Can you remember what’s on the tray?

Let’s See How You Did-Here’s what was on the tray: • Paper clip • Safety Pin • Post-it pad/note pad • Button • Rubber band • Pen • Halloween Pencil • Band-aid • Scissors • Red crayon • Green crayon • Glue stick • Puff’s tissues • Folder (purple) • Red notebook • Pair of Dice • Eraser • Word Search (Search-A-Word) • Ruler • Snow White Barbie Doll • Burt Bee’s Lip Balm • Hair clip • Smiley face stickers • Pink necklace • Deck of cards

  5. What are some things you can you do to help your mind? • Do not let your thoughts and mind come in contact with unhealthy things. Examples: • Drugs • Violence • Unhealthy patterns in your life • Get involved with family members or members of your community. Find thing which require your involvement and attention. • Find activities that you can communicate and participate in on a weekly basis because it’s a great way to keep you healthy by using your mind. ( Brian, 2012) • Look for new ways to keep your mind stimulated. Have something that you can work on daily that can keep you focused and stimulate your way of thinking. Examples: • Memorization exercises • Crossword puzzles • Reading a book • Researching a new subject • Concentrate on the positive things in the world around you. Examples: Make a list of things that: • You are thankful for • You are looking forward to • You can appreciate in your life

What is a mnemonic device? • a method a person can use to help them improve their ability to remember something (Psych Central Staff, 2012). • a memory technique to help your brain better explain and recall important information. (Psych Central Staff , 2012) • a simple shortcut that helps us connect the information we want to remember with a picture, a sentence, or a word. (Psych Central Staff, 2012). • many people use them, even if they don’t know their name. (Psych Central Staff , 2012) • a way of memorizing information so that it “stays” in our brain longer and can be remembered without difficulty in the future. (Psych Central Staff , 2012)

  8. Acronyms • Roy G. Biv is an easy way to learn the colors in the rainbow:Ris for RedOis for OrangeYis for YellowGis for GreenBis for BlueIis for IndigoVis for Violet • Every Good Boy Does Fine for the notes on the treble clef which are EGBDF or All Cows Eat Grass forthe notes of the bass clef which are ACEG • KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) • USA (United States of America)

  10. Chunking & Organizing • Telephone numbers in the United States are a good example of this (10 digits broken into 3 chunks) • Chunking is breaking down larger pieces of information into smaller, organized “chunks” of more easily managed information.
