General Computing News • UNIX OS Support list modifications • Solaris 8 certification finished. • Linux 7.1 not yet geared up. • Tru64 5.x certification and freeze not likely. • General question on certification being forced by Linux • Mass Storage Systems • Enstore in production use • Utilised on farms, fnalu, sdss, cms • HPSS to be retired this Fall. • Serial Media working group decision: Exabyte Mammoth 2 • Working with ADIC and Exabyte to resolve issues. HEPiX/HEPNT

  3. General Computing News • General Kerberos Authentication deployment now beginning. Goal of covering the whole site by 12/31/01. (Talks by Mark (Tues) and Dane later) • Testing an Xterm replacement that can do Kerberos (demo ?) • Stage 2 of NGOP prototype. (talk by Tanya Levshina) • Evaluations/Investigations • Combined compute farm and storage concepts. • SAN technologies: mostly background • Layer 4 switching • Alteon, Cisco, Foundry • Possible uses: web, email, afs, analysis farm • PC/IDE Linux file servers in early production (6 servers ~ 10 TB) • Involvement in PPDG is making Grid connections for us. • SC2000(1) outreach efforts with SLAC viewed as successful.   4. RUN II Computing News • First Run II collisions in the Tevatron early April. Both experiments taking commissioning detectors and DAQ. • Farms • D0 has 100 farm nodes in production. 100 more in October. • CDF has 90 farm nodes in production. 64 more on order now • Both CDF and D0 in operation in KRB5 Pilot Realm. • CDF had demonstrated date at rate through full system. D0 commissioning L3 system. • Both experiments using large disk cache’s heavily for early analysis. HEPiX/HEPNT

CMS Computing News • New Hardware • FY01 budget issues resolving and expect to make several procurements yet this year. • Enhanced Analysis system • Test and prototype systems • Expanded production farm • Support • Meeting held at Brookhaven for US CMS and Atlas to exchange experience. • Overlapping demands of production and R&D are quite stressful on the system now. HEPiX/HEPNT

Core Service Computing News • Selected Sophos email gateway virus scanner. • Selected LSI Logic Fibre disk for AFS server upgrade. • Still investigating new print server options. • Recent patch deploy showed 1082 customers for AutoRPM service for Linux. • 231 offsite. • 732 updated 1st night • Work on OS installation service for Linux, Irix continuing.   7. Organizational News • Matthias Kasemann replaces Tom Nash as Computer Security Executive effective June 1. • Dane Skow will become Deputy Computer Security Executive. • Mark Kaletka will become OSS Department Head. HEPiX/HEPNT
