  2. The Tide Rises,The Tide Falls Today we are doing to analyze the literal and figurative meaning of a poem.

  3. How to Read a Poem: • First, you should mark it up; write in the margins; react to it; get involved with it. • Circle important, or striking, or repeated words. Draw lines to connect related ideas. Mark difficult or confusing words, lines, and passages. • Please do that now.

  4. Vocabulary • What is a curlew? • What does hasten mean? • What does efface mean? • What is a hostler?

  5. Vocabulary • What is a curlew? any of several shorebirds that  have a long, slender, down-curved bill • What does hasten mean? To move or act with speed • What does efface mean? To rub out or erase • What is a hostler? a person who takes care of horses, especially at an inn

  6. Identify the subject • What is your initial impression of the poem's subject? Try writing out an answer to the question, "What is this poem about?"--and then return to this question throughout your analysis. Do this at the bottom of your paper.

  7. Examine Closely • Now we are going to look at some lines of the poem and examine it for use of figurative language. What might the author literally be saying? Why might he be implying? • Look at Lines 8 & 9 • Look at lines 13 & 14

  8. Sound Devices • Did you notice any sound devices used? Rhyme Rhythmn Alliteration Onomatopoeia Repetition

  9. Theme? • Go back to our initial question “What is this poem about?” Please add to your original answer if you need to. • Theme is the general idea or insight about life that a writer wishes to express. It is the overall central message. • What is the theme of the poem?
