  3. Punishments for people who are guilty • Probation • You remain free in society, but under supervision of a parole officer. • In 2000, more than 3.8 million lived on probation. • Imprisonment • Hard time! • The Jail House! • The Pen! • In 2009, more than 1.9 million people were in prison!

  4. What happens if you are a good prisoner? • You might get parole • Early release from prison. • Can be offered by judges for “good behavior” • Usually comes with specific rules • Must report to parole officer often • Can not travel outside of the country

  6. BAILS, FINES AND PUNISHMENT • Eighth Amendment (1791): • Protects citizens from excessive bails or fines • Includes cruel and unusual punishment (death penalty)
