  1. Building Community • within Online Programs

  2. Building Community within Online Programs • Students in online distance education programs often feel a sense of disconnect from their peers and instructors. This disconnect is believed to affect retention rates and community building within these programs. This roundtable provides an opportunity to discuss one or more possible solutions to meet the need for community in online programs as a whole, not just individual courses.

  3. Community in the Online Classroom Content Social Presence Social Presence Student Peers Instructor

  4. What about online programs that are made up of multiple courses? How can we build a sense of community among program participants who are in different courses?

  5. Face-to-Face students meet... • ...in the hallway. • ...in the union building. • ...in the dining hall. • ...at program-wide events.

  6. How can distance students enjoy the informal learning and sense of community that F2F students enjoy?

  7. Discussion Prompts • If successful online education requires a different pedagogy than f2f instruction, is the same true of online community building? Is more required than just creating virtual versions of traditional community building environments? • What types of interaction do online distance education students feel they are missing, if any? • What types of interactions do students and instructors wish they had outside of the formal classroom environment, if any? • What is lacking in current strategies being utilized to build program-wide community? • What other questions do you think are relevant?

  8. Themes developed from roundtable • Some online students want more interaction/community, some do not. • There is a difference between interaction and community. Some want interaction, but not community and vice versa. • Experiences of online education vary by student, program, and instructor. Even students in the same program can have very different perceptions about their experience.
