  1. Deploying Windows 7 with MDT 2012 Mohammed Yousuf Ali www.arabitpro.com E-mail: yousuf@arabitpro.com Blog: http://myousufali.wordpress.com

  2. My Goal For This Session • To show you some cool stuff that will make you want to learn more about these tools • The Tools are either FREE or In-The-Box • Deploy Windows Server OSs • Windows Automated Installation Kit 2.0 (WAIK) • Using Windows Deployment Services (WDS) • It’s the new Remote Installation Service (RIS) • Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 Update 1 (MDT 2010 U1) • But first before we get into the tools • Let’s talk Image Formats

  3. It’s a free solution accelerator for deploying windows Any operating system from Windows XP and Server 2003 up to the present Based on industry best practices It simplifies the deployment process Wizard-driven process Driver and software update injection Role installation Application installation Boot image generation • What is the Microsoft Deployment Tool Kit?

  4. Windows Image Formats • There are two • .Wim • Contain a single volume (c: d: e:) • Multiple images may be stored in a single .wim file • Single instancing • No redundant file storage • Service image offline • Apply patches quick and easily • .Vhd • Contain an entire hard drive (multiple volumes)

  5. Thick vs Thin – Are Those Your Only Choices? • Thick images contain an OS and all applications • More difficult to make changes to later • Thin images usually contain only the OS • Applications are deployed after the OS • Group Policy deployment • MDT 2012 • Manually • Hybrid images contain OS and corporate approved applications • Like Office 2010

  6. Windows Automated Installation Kit

  7. WAIK • Install the Server OS • Install applications (hardware utilities, etc…) • Sysprep • Boot to a Windows Pre Installation Environment (WinPE containing ImageX) • Capture the image • ImageX /capture {volume to capture} {path and name to store the new image} {description} • ImageX /capture c: c:\2008R2.wim “Server 2008 R2” • Apply an image • Copy the image to the local machine • ImageX /apply c: c:\2008R2.wim 1 “Server 2008 R2”

  8. Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) WINDOWS PREINSTALLATION ENVIRONMENT IMAGEX.EXE WINDOWS SYSTEM IMAGE MANAGER USER STATE MIGRATION TOOLKIT 4.0

  9. Microsoft DEPLOYMENT TOOLKIT 2012 (mdt)

  10. Setup MDT 2012 Support OS for MDT 2012 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2003 R2 Windows 7 Vista SP2 XP SP3 1. Install WAIK 2. Install MDT 2012 3. Create Deployment Share MDT 2012 Deployment Server

  11. MDT Network Deployment Process 1 2 MDT Deployment Server SYSPREP Store Image W7 DVD MDT WinPE Reference Download Image 4 Targets 3 Win 7 Win 7 Custom MDT WinPE

  12. OR MDT Deployment Image Bare Metal

  13. Creating a Deployment Share (DS) • The DS is the shared folder where target machines connect to perform the deployment from • You must create it • Old MDT created it for you

  14. Add an Operating System

  15. OSs Supported To Deploy • XP SP3 • Vista SP1 or later • Windows 7 • Windows Server 2003 R2 • Windows Server 2008 & R2 XP & 2003

  16. Create a Task Sequence • The task sequence will group the OS, applications, drivers, packages you would like to include for one deployment • The same task sequence can be run in two different ways • Standard Client TS • LiteTouchPE_x86.iso • Within XP • DEMO

  17. From the client • Boot the MDT WinPE • CD • DVD • External hard drive • UFD (USB flash device) • Run the Deployment Wizard

  18. Automate the Clients Experience • Choose which screens are displayed during the deployment • Suppress the ones you don’t want anyone to see or change like: • Product Key • Administrator’s password • Properties of your deployment share • Rules tab • F:\DeploymentShare\Control\CustomSettings.ini

  19. Windows Deployment Service (WDS)

  20. In a Perfect WDS World Discover IP DHCP/WDS Bare-Metal Offer IP/PXE Server Request Acknowledge

  21. Windows Deployment Service • WDS replaces Remote Installation Services (RIS) • Provides both boot and installation images from the WDS server • Supports WIM and .VHD technology

  22. WDS Requirements • WDS server must be a member of an Active Directory domain • DHCP • DNS • NTFS partition on which to store images

  23. WDS Requirements DHCP 2 3 1 AD/DNS Bare-Metal WDS

  24. Installing WDS • Installing WDS on a 2003 SP1 Server • Install RIS • Install patch from the WAIK: windows_deployment_services_update.exe • Installing WDS on a 2003 SP2 Server • Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / Windows Components / WDS • Installing WDS on a 2008 (& R2) server • Server Manager • Add Roles • Select Windows Deployment Services from the list of roles

  25. Configuring WDS – Welcome Open the WDS snap-in Expand WDS and right-click the Servers node Choose Add Server. Default is the local server. Click OK. Right-click your server and choose Configure Server.

  26. Storing Your Images

  27. Is Your WDS Server also a DHCP Server? WDS & DHCP both listen on UDP 67

  28. WDS server responds to…

  29. Adding a Boot Image • The most current will always be best • Windows 7 Boow.wim can deploy • Vista SP1 • Windows Server 2003 R2 • Windows 7 • Server 2008 & R2 • Accidently use a Vista or Vista SP1 boot.wim? • Vista boot.wim cannot deploy W7 or 2K8 R2 • Failure on the Offline servicing pass even if it’s not configured to install patches

  30. Adding an OS Image • Both .wim and .vhd are supported • Adding a .wim • Right–click Install Images • Add Install Image • Image Groups • Adding a .vhd • Elevated command prompt • WDSUTIL /Add-Image /ImageFile:\\Server\Share \Win7.vhd /Server:WDSServer /ImageType:Install /ImageGroup:Windows7 /Filename:"Windows7.vhd"

  31. WDS & DHCP • 3 Scenarios • WDS and DHCP on the same subnet/ different servers • Client will find WDS by broadcasting • WDS and DHCP on different subnets • Client must find WDS through options 66 and 67 set in DHCP • WDS & DHCP on same server • Client must find WDS through Option 60 in DHCP

  32. WDS & DHCP Same Subnet DHCP Bare-Metal Request Acknowledge Offer IP Discover IP/PXE Server Discover IP/PXE Server WDS I’m WDS

  33. WDS & DHCP Different Subnets DHCP Bare-Metal Discover IP/PXE Server Offer IP Option 66 Option 67 Acknowledge Request WDS

  34. WDS & DHCP Discover IP DHCP / WDS Bare-Metal Offer IP Option 60 I’m also WDS Request Acknowledge

  35. MDT & WDS Together MDT Distribution Server W7 DVD Model MDT WinPE MDT WinPE Store Image Download Image WDS Server F12 Targets
