  1. REPORT ON INTERAGENCY ACTIVITIES GRENADA

  2. Status on Inter-agency activities within Grenada • Incomplete Work plan • The Officer previously charged with the responsibility of collecting data has been seconded to another office since 2012 • No officer was re-assigned because of limited human resource in department. • Hence, no Inter-Agency meeting was held • Contact was recently made with most stakeholders informing them of need for data collection for these indicators • A list of organisations and their focal point for data collection was developed • Intend to have follow-up meetings upon return to office targeting organisations and respective focal point.

  3. Challenges • Limited experience in the collection of Environmental data collection at the CSO • The line ministries do not collect and disseminate data in the way in is required by CARICOM for the Caribbean Specific Indicators. • Ministries have been given templates and spreadsheets from external agencies in the past for compilation of data and indicators but have limited understanding of the metadata and formulas in these spread sheets.

  4. Challenges – Cont’d • No Human Resource Ministry of Agriculture……… to focus on collection of environment data. • The contact persons in Environment was transferred to another ministry • In Ministry of Health focal point is not clear for data on Environmental Health • Limited trained and competent staff to collect and compile data.

  5. Assistance Needed • In country assistance to develop a strong foundation for environmental data collection within the CSO • Specific training and assistance is needed for line ministries and agencies in the production of the required indicators.

  6. presented by Tamika GeorgeGrenada’s Presentation

  7. Definition of the IndicatorMethane CH4 • A colorless, odorless, flammable gas that is the main constituent of natural gas. It is the simplest member of the alkane series of hydrocarbons

  8. Definition of Indicator Nitrous Oxide (N2O) • a colorless gas with a sweetish odor, prepared by heating ammonium nitrate. It produces exhilaration or anesthesia when inhaled and is used as an anesthetic and as an aerosol propellant.

  9. Methods used in the computation of Methane CH4 • All of these was placed into an already prepared Excel Worksheet so as to obtain the results for the indicator • Number or heads of different livestock – non-dairy cattle, poultry, swine, sheep, goat, asses, rabbits, horse • Total municipal solid waste generated • Proportion disposed to solid waste sites • Total national industrial output • Waste water produced per unit by industry

  10. Method of computation of N2O • All of these was placed into an already prepared Excel Worksheet so as to obtain the results for the indicator • Total synthetic fertilizer used • Production of dry pulses • Production of other crops

  11. Formula of Computation. • Because IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) would have worked formulas into the initial excel spreadsheets given. A clear understanding of the formula used in computing this indicator is not known.

  12. Data Sources • _ Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority • _ National Water and Sewerage Authority • _ Livestock Division (MOA) • _ Grenada Sugar Factory Limited • _ Grenada Breweries Limited • _ River Antoine Estate • _ Shell Antilles and Guianas • _ Caribbean Agro Industries • _ Ministry of Communication and Works • _ Ideal Bakery, Blue Danube Bakery, Imagination Bakery • _ Local Wine makers • _ Land Use Division (MOA) • _ Ministry of Health • _ Fisheries Division (MOA) • _ Forestry Department (MOA) • _ Physical Planning Unit (MOF) • _ Lands and Survey Division (MOA)

  13. Methods of Data collection • The data were acquired through site visits • interviews with heads of departments/ general managers from the relevant stakeholder institutions/organisations • reviews of relevant reports.

  14. Data Year • 1994

  15. Data Gaps • 1994 to present

  16. Recommendations and Areas for improvement Regular data collection Clear formulas and better understanding of the method of computation of the indicator CSOs and Environment data collection units establishing memorandums of understanding (MOUs) as it relates to data collection for this indicator.
