  1. Online Job Search A CYC Electives Module 10-15-10

  2. Variety of ways to search for jobs online • Job search engines • Local job listing websites • Company website listings • Online staffing services • Government, State and City websites • Classified Ads on Newspaper websites

  3. Job Search Engines • Generally allow you to search by Keyword, Location (City state or zip) and by job category • Posts tips for job searching, interviewing, career development, etc • Can upload resume for employers to view

  4. Exercise: • We are now going to use a job search engine to look for a job • Everyone open your browser and type in www.careerbuilder.com • In the location box type in 43725 • Notice the types of jobs and the actual locations that come up

  5. Local Job Listing Sites • Much like a job search engine but usually only lists local jobs • Some allow you the ability to upload your resume, as well as posts tips for career development, interviewing, etc while others are strictly job openings with descriptions and contact information

  6. Exercise: • Now we are going to use a local job listing site to look for a job • Everyone go back to your browser and type in www.guernseyworks.com • Go to the left column and click on job listings, then click on Guernsey County • Notice that these listings are job openings in this area, with job description and contact info

  7. Other, similar examples: • Company website listings • Online staffing services • Government, State and City websites • Classified Ads on Newspaper websites

  8. Online Job Scams: Unfortunately there are a lot of online job scams that may look legitimate but can be dangerous (i.e. identity theft). Examples include: • Work at home scams • Government employment scams • Secret Shopper scams

  9. Helpful tips to follow: • Don’t pay a fee upfront. Most legitimate employment agencies don’t charge unless they actually succeed in getting you a job, and often it’s the new employer who pays. • Be cautious about emails offering help getting a job. Many unsolicited emails are fraudulent. Information from: http://www.fraud.org/tips/internet/jobscams.htm 15

  10. Helpful tips to follow: • Know exactly what services are being offered. The company may only provide advice or help writing a resume. • Document all promises. Print out the information so you can prove what you were promised. Information from: http://www.fraud.org/tips/internet/jobscams.htm 15

  11. Helpful tips to follow: • Be wary of promises to help get you a government job. If a test is required, the government usually conducts it. • Money-back guarantees may not be worth the paper they’re written on. Fraudulent employment services will use an endless string of excuses for why you’re not entitled to a refund. • Do your own research. Use the public library, newspapers, the Internet, and your state employment office. Information from: http://www.fraud.org/tips/internet/jobscams.htm 15
