  2. SAKHAROV´S PRIZE FOR FREEDOM OF THOUGHT • Every year the European Parliament gives this prize to extraordinary individuals or organizations who fight against intolerance and injustice. It is called Sakharov´s Prize for freedom of thought • The Sakharov Prize is usually awarded annually on or around 10 December, the day on which the United Nations General Assembly ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, it is also celebrated as Human Rights Day • The prize has been awarded since 1988

WHAT IS SAKCHAROV´S PRIZE? • Winners get this prize for extraordinary asset in the area of: • Defence of human rights and basic freedoms • Defence of the rights of minorities • Observance of international law • Development of democracy and the legal state • The prize is obtained by individuals, organizations, without consideration to their nationality • A shortlist of nominees is drawn up by Foreign Affairs Committee and Development Committee, with the winner announced in October. The prize is accompanied by a monetary award of €50,000.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought • The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was established in December 1988 by the European Parliament as a means to honour individuals or organisations who had dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and freedom of thought

  5. WHO WAS ANDREI SAKHAROV? • Andrej Dmitrijevič Sacharov (1921 – 1989) • Russian physicist, awardee of Nobel Prize for Peace in 1975 • He was the discoverer of hydrogen bomb • He was also a Soviet dissident and the fighter for human rights

Elisabeta Rizea - Romania Political prisoner • In 2008, Elisabeta Rizea was the first romanian nominalized for the prestigious Saharov Award. • The award is given by the European Parliament every year for special results in human rights,minority protection,democracy development and freedom of thinking.

Elisabeta Rizea • After she was captured by the Romanian militia in 1952, she was declared enemy of the people and sentenced to death because she refused to give information about the other partisans. Eventually her sentence was commuted to seven years in prison. • During her twelve years spent in prison, she was subjected to various forms of torture. • After Ceausescu’s fall her memoirs and interviews were published and she became a national symbol of the resistance of female peasantry.

  13. CHU ŤIA – AWARDEE of Sakharov´s prize in 2008 • Chu Ťia, Chinese political activist and fighter for human rights • Chu Ťia is the coordinator of as called „barefoot lawyers“

  14. WINNER OF SAKHAROV´S PRIZE IN 2010 • Sakcharov´s prize won this year Guillermo Fariñas from Cuba • Guillermo Fariñas has shown enduring opposition to the Cuban regime though non-violent means. He ended his latest hunger strike when the Cuban regime on 8 July 2010 vowed to release 52 prisoners of conscience.  Fariñas is more than worthy as a candidate for the 2010 Sakharov Prize.
