  2. Learning Targets: • Explain how to prepare for and make a good impression on a job interview. • Obtain skills for interviewing. • Gain an understanding of the Do’s and Do Don’ts of an interview.

  3. Completing an Employment Application • Write neatly using a black or dark blue pen. • Fill in all blanks appropriately. • Be truthful. • Have all necessary information with you. • Proofread carefully.

  4. The Job Interview • A job interview is a face-to-face meeting with a potential employer to discuss a job opening. • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

  5. Preparing for the Job Interview • Research the hiring company. • Be prepared to answer questions. • Review your resume. • Be prepared to answer open-ended questions • Questions that require you to respond in paragraphs (rather than “yes” or “no”) and talk about yourself. • Be prepared to ask questions.

  6. Things to Take to an Interview • Copies of your • Resume • Reference (letters) • Transcripts (as needed) • Pad of paper • A pen (black or blue) • Utilize a briefcase or folder to keep your documents organized.

  7. Arrive on time. Dress appropriately. Be prepared. Greeting – firm handshake. Appear self-confident. Be courteous. Think before you speak. Emphasize your strong points. Be enthusiastic. Look for cues. Go alone. Making a Good First Impression

  9. What does a typical work day look like? Is there additional training or continuing education opportunities available to employees? What opportunities for advancement does the company offer? Are there any mandatory requirements (traveling, working late, etc.) for this position? Questions to ask the Employer

  10. Tell me about yourself. What are you greatest strengths? What are you biggest weaknesses? Why do you want to work for this company? What do you know about our company? Describe your ideal work environment. Be Ready To Answer

  11. How do you work within a team setting? How would you resolve conflict? Describe a tough situation you have encountered and how you dealt with it. Why should we hire you for this position? Continued

  12. The Follow-Up • Follow-up is contact with the employer after the interview but before hiring occurs. • reminds the employer of who you are and could improve your chance of getting the job.

  13. Writing a Thank-You Letter/email • Remind the interviewer of your interview. • Remind the interviewer of your interest. • Express your eagerness to hear from the interviewer. • Keep it short and to the point. • Must be error-free.
