  5. Walk on the beach • THE JERSEY SHORE(Beach communities are listed north to south.)CAPE MAY COUNTYBEACHESOcean CityOcean City bills itself as "America's Greatest Family Resort" and has been living up to its claim for generations. With eight miles of pristine beaches and a three-mile boardwalk, the emphasis is always on fun for the whole family. The surf at Ocean City is particularly well suited to youngsters due to the offshore sandbars. When the beach day is over, the boardwalk comes alive with plenty of rides, shopping, great places to eat, and people-watching, too. Beach fee. (800) BEACH NJ. • StrathmereThis quiet enclave occupies perhaps the thinnest strip of barrier island along the Jersey Shore. Located between bustling Ocean City and Sea Isle City, Strathmere offers a glimpse of what life might have been like at the shore before summer visitors arrived en masse. On the ocean side, lifeguards are on duty and there are no beach fees, plus fishing and surfing conditions are often quite good.(609) 628-2011. • Sea Isle CityBeaches like Sea Isle City place the emphasis on family vacations of a quieter sort. The five-mile stretch of beach is Sea Isle's biggest attraction, and deservedly so. The town also features superb recreational facilities such as tennis courts, basketball courts, and ball fields. Along the bay side, party boats are available for offshore fishing. Beach fee. (609) 263-8687. www.seaislecity.org • AvalonAvalon is one of the finer beachfront communities along the entire coast. Its high dunes have been carefully preserved and provide a beautiful natural setting on the beaches. Situated on "Seven Mile Beach Island," the drive from Avalon through Stone Harbor and then on to Wildwood is breathtaking. Don't miss the marshlands protected by the World Wildlife Fund. Beach fee. (609) 967-3936. • Stone HarborStone Harbor is very much like Avalon, and visitors are drawn to the stores and eateries in the vicinity of Third Avenue. At the southern end of town, be sure to see the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, the only heronry in America sponsored by a municipality. Bring the family to the Wetlands Institute and Museum for a "hands on" marshland experience. Beach fee. (609) 368-6101. Wetlands Institute: (609) 368-1211. • The WildwoodsFor generations, the world-famous Wildwood boardwalk has been a premier shore attraction. With several piers featuring all the latest rides, there's plenty of excitement to go around for the whole family. The Wildwoods are comprised of North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest. All three are famous for their super-wide beaches that still offer free admission. The Wildwoods are also noted for their watersports activities with lots of charter and party-boat fishing available. You can also go crabbing, surfing, bird watching…and more. Just call 1-(800) WW By Sea. • Cape MayThe southernmost resort on the Jersey Shore and one of the nation's oldest vacation spots, Cape May is a must-see. It's famous for its preserved Victorian architecture and pleasant charm. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) keeps the Victorian era alive year-round with trolley tours through the gas-lit streets. Walking tours of many of the 600 authentically restored Victorian homes include the Emlen Physick Estate, an 18-room Stick Style mansion. Year after year, Cape May's charming family atmosphere draws people to see this unique example of living history. (609) 884-5508. Call (609) 884-5404 for tour information. • Lower TownshipTake a trip back in time and see the Jersey Shore the way it was generations ago. Lower Township comprises parts of both the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay sides of Cape May Point. Still thriving with many fishing villages, the township also boasts many farms, forests, and wetlands, and natural beach areas. Saltwater recreation is plentiful, spanning sailing, fishing, boating, swimming, and more. Look for Cape May Diamonds at Sunset Beach. (609) 886-2005. Cape May PointThe southernmost point of New Jersey and the marshlands that make up a great deal of the area are famous for the thousands of migrating birds that stop here on their way to summer nesting grounds. Like all of Cape May County, the lifestyle of year-round residents and summer visitors is closely tied to the bountiful resources and recreational opportunities offered by the ocean and bay. (609) 884-8468. The chief attractions in the area include Cape May Lighthouse, the Cape May Bird Observatory, Lily Lake, and Higbee Wildlife Management Area.
