  2. Course Selection for 10th grade is based on: • NPHS graduation requirements • A 42 period cycle • Elective choices • Current grades • Teacher recommendations

Graduation Requirements To graduate from North Penn High School, you need 23.0 credits: • 4 credits of English • 4 credits of Social Studies • 3 or 4 credits of Math • 3 or 4 credits of Science • 2 credits of Arts and Humanities • 1.2 credits of Phys. Ed. • 0.9 credits of Health • 3.9 credits of Electives=23.0 credits minimum • PSSA Proficient • You MUST complete a graduation project.

Credits • Major subjects meet 6, 7 or 8 periods/ cycle = 1.0/1.15/1.3 credit • Semester (1/2 year courses) meet 6 periods = 0.5 credit • Minor subjects meet 4 periods/ cycle = 0.7 credit or 2 periods/cycle = 0.3 credit *Note: You need 4.0 credits minimum to be a 10th grader. You need 11 credits minimum to be an 11th grader.

  5. 10th Grade Required Courses • English • World Cultures • Mathematics • Biology • Physical Education-Aquatics • Health Decisions In addition to the courses listed above, 10th grade schedules must reflect one of the following combinations (depending on proficiency status). -One major elective and 2,3, or 4 minor electives -Two major electives -Two major electives and one minor elective

Specialized Offerings at NPHS: Engineering Academy: Students currently placed in level 5 or 6 math and science classes and who are interested in careers in engineering should refer to pages 54-55. Interested students must complete an application which is available at: http://www.northpennengineering.org/ or from Mr. McCloud in the guidance office. Air Force JROTC: Aerospace Science and Leadership Education The AFJROTC classes meets as a single period major and is credited as an elective science (page 6).

  8. GPA/Class Rank Grade Point Average (GPA) - Is used to determine honor roll *Note: The five majors that yield the highest GPA are used in GPA calculation. The highest GPA possible is a 4.3. Honor Roll Values Table Class rank- A weighted GPA is used to determine class rank, which means course level is taken into consideration. The highest weighted GPA that can be earned is a 6.5. At the conclusion of the school year, class rank will be calculated across all three middle schools.

Feb 2nd Science & SS & Special Area teachers place levels on cards. Feb 3rd Final opportunity for students to obtain levels from teachers. Feb 6thCompleted cards are returned to homeroom teachers. April Verification sheets sent home with report cards June 29thLAST DAY FOR COURSE CHANGES

  10. Recommendations • Your teachers will base their recommendations on your current performance in class. If you wish to choose a level other than that recommended, you will need to perform at a high level in your current placement. DO NOT CHANGE THE LEVEL ON THE CARD. • A challenge to a level recommendation must be initiated by a parent through the current teacher after the third marking period. See Mrs. Hyne in April.

  11. Course Card Worksheet • Turn to the inside back cover of the Program of Studies Booklet to the Sophomore page. • Use this page as your rough copy. You and your parents can discuss and list the courses you want to schedule on the course card. • You will copy the courses and course codes from the worksheet onto your pink course card. The pink card is your final copy and is returned to your homeroom teacher at the end of each day. No parent signature is required. • The completed pink card is due to your homeroom teacher on Friday, February 6.

Course Choices… • Turn to pages 11-21 and find Grade 10 Courses • Course descriptions start on Page 27 • Look at all the possibilities! • Highlight the classes you might like to take in the next three years. • Do any have a prerequisite? Can I take it as a 10th grader or do I need to wait until I am a junior or a senior? • What can I take now to schedule the courses I want? • Use the Four-Year Plan on page 68 to see how and when it all fits together.

  13. What to Check on Worksheet & Course Card Teachers have signed recommended levels for required classes and elective majors. All course numbers are listed. Every elective, except those with a teacher signature, must have an alternative course number listed. Write alternatives to the right of the elective. If an alternative is not listed, you will be placed into any class that fits into your schedule. Student signature is on the card. Minimum of 38 to a maximum of 42 periods required.
