  2. A. What is pollution? • The addition of any substance to water that has a negative effect • Affect surface, ground and rain water • DDT- can build up in algae which are the bottom of the food chain so it is passed on • Cause birth defects, illness (cancer) and skin problems

  3. b. Point and nonpoint sources • Sources include human wastes, industrial wastes, agricultural wastes and runoff • Point source- source can be identified (ex. Pipe) • Nonpoint- cannot be tied to a specific source

  4. C. Human wastes • Dr. Snow traced cholera to a nearby sewage pipe • During heavy rain and snow sanitary sewers can overflow and can pollute the water (boil alert) • Septic tanks must be placed in an area that is not near a river or stream

  5. D. Industrial wastes • Laws limit the amount of pollution of chemical waste • Underground barrels were buried but opened causing pollution • When smoke and exhaust is released it can build up in clouds as acid rain • Heated water is returned causing a change in the environment

  6. E. Agricultural chemicals • Fertilizers runoff and become nonpoint pollutants • This fertilizers causes the surrounding organisms to grow as well causing eutrophication • Pesticides run off of plants as well

  7. f. Runoff from roads • Oil and other waste from cars runoff when it rains • Nonpoint pollution • Can pollute groundwater as well

  8. G. Cleaning up polluted water • Natural ways to filter water –wetlands • Bacteria also contributes • Passing water through sand and rock also help clean water • Can also go through treatment plant

  9. H. Preventing pollution • 1960’s govt. created laws to help prevent pollution • Also est. water quality standards • Recycle heated water instead of returning it to a lake or stream • You can be careful when disposing of harmful chemicals
