  2. Godliness → Brotherly Kindness • Brotherly Kindness is a Natural Progression from Godliness • Consider the Two Greatest Commandments of the Old Testament. Matthew 22:35-40. Love of God and love of our neighbor encompasses all commandments.

  3. Defining Brotherly Kindness • Greek: Phileo Adelphos, or Phildelphia • Phileo: an affection of fondness toward others • Adelphos: a brother or brethren • Combined it means the love of brothers or brethren. Also used to describe the affection shown by an animal for its young.

  4. Defining Brotherly Kindness • Used in Scripture to describe the special love held among fellow Christians • Commanded by God: I Thess. 3:12, 4:9 • If we love God, we will love our brethren. Our love for one another is demonstrated by the kindness we show to one another.

  5. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Must be Active. Must be demonstrated in Action. I John 3:17-18 • Involves Physical Needs of Others • Living faith demonstrated by acts of kindness. James 2:15-16. • Early Christians demonstrated love through benevolent acts of kindness toward other Christians. Acts 2:44-45, 4:32, 34-35; I Corinthians 16:1-3

  6. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Physical Needs, continued • Judgment Scene of Matthew 25:34-40. Each of the activities mentioned by Christ are acts of kindness.

  7. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Physical Needs, continued • Gave the hungry something to eat • Gave the thirsty something to drink • Invited the stranger in • Provided clothes for those who needed them • Visited those who were imprisoned

  8. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • When we show kindness to our brethren, we are showing kindness to Christ. Matt 25:40. • Failure to do this results in God not knowing us and will cause us to be lost. Matt 25:45-46.

  9. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Involves Spiritual Needs of Others • Forgiving one another. Eph. 4:32 • Rebuke: Gal. 6:1, I Thess. 5:14

  10. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Spiritual Needs, continued. • Protecting the conscience of weaker brethren. Romans 14; I Corinthians 8 • Bearing one another’s burdens. Gal. 6:2

  11. Brotherly Kindness in Scripture • Must be properly motivated. • Must not be limited only to our “circle”. Luke 14:12-14. Remember to include the poor, less popular, elderly. • Must be without hypocrisy. Rom. 12:9, II Cor. 6:6, I Peter 1:22

  13. Products of Brotherly Kindness • Allows us to know God. I John 4:7-8, 20-21. • Allows the world to identify us as Jesus’ disciples. John 13:34-35 • Brings peace and unity. Ephesians 4:1-3

  14. Products of Brotherly Kindness, cont’d • Causes us to give preference to one another. Rom. 12:10 • Will be demonstrated in our speech. James 3, Proverbs 18:21, 31:26 • Increases the faith of others. II Corinthians 8-9

  15. Brotherly Kindness Illustrated • The Story of Ruth. • Ruth’s (a Moabite) kindness to Naomi results in her following Naomi to Bethlehem. • Upon hearing of Ruth’s kindness to Naomi, Boaz is in turn kind to Ruth.

  16. Brotherly Kindness Illustrated • The Story of Ruth, cont’d. • Boaz marries Ruth. • Ruth becomes an ancestor of Jesus. • Our acts of kindness may lead to unimaginable blessings.

  17. Brotherly Kindness (or lack) Illustrated • David, Saul, and Jonathan. I Sam. 18-31, II Sam. 1, 9 • Despite ill treatment by Saul, David was kind to both Saul and Jonathan. • Even after the death of Saul and Jonathan, David sought an opportunity to show kindness to their family.

  18. Brotherly Kindness (or lack) Illustrated • David, Nabal and Abigail. I Samuel 25. • Nabal did not reciprocate David’s kindness • Abigail’s kindness to David saved the lives of the males in Nabal’s family. • Abigail marries David.

  19. Conclusion • The love and kindness we are to show all brethren is a command of God. It is not optional. • Brotherly kindness must be properly motivated. • Showing brotherly kindness has many spiritual byproducts and (possibly unexpected) blessings.

  20. Conclusion • Showing brotherly kindness (or failing to do so) may have a big impact on the faithfulness of others. • Our next lesson will also discuss love, but it is a different type of love from what we have just studied.
