  1. Computer Programmer Jordan Nevejans February 10th, 2014 4th Hour Career /Technology Foundations

  2. Introduction “To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.” (Paul Ehrlich) The reason that I like computer programming is that its always challenging. It involves constant problem solving and clever solutions. In order to get a better understanding of my career as a computer programmer, I will be researching the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications, advancement, job outlook/employments, earnings, and a related occupation.

  3. Nature of Work • Write programs in a variety of computer languages, such as C++ and Java • Update and expand existing programs • Debug programs by testing for and fixing errors • Build and use computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) tools to automate the writing of some code • Use code libraries, which are collections of independent lines of code, to simplify the writing

  4. Working Conditions • Mental: Programming is based on problem solving • Indoor: Computers don’t like the outside • Hours: Nine to five, five days a week • Conditions: Programmers normally work alone, but sometimes work with other computer specialists on large projects

  5. Training, Qualification, Advancement Standard Education: Bachelor’s degree I plan on being self taught in this field Classes Taken: Java Programming MIT 6.00x Intro to Web Design

  6. Job Outlook/Employment Employment Rate: 8% rising Job openings in: San Francisco New York City Seattle

  7. Earnings Median wage: $74,280 Goal: + Ford Mustang GT $30,000 Goal: + Four bedroom house $120,000 Goal: + Cessna 182D Skylane $40,000

  8. Web Developer Design and create websites Associate’s degree $62,500 per year 20% Job increase

  9. Summary After researching this field, I am still interested in it as a career. The best part would be creating programs that thousands of people will use. Debugging code is probably the worst part of the job. In the end I’ve learned how much computer programmers earn on average, and where the most job openings are.
