  1. Sympathy For the Devil By: Gustavo PinedaMarco Osorio

  2. The article talks about how ‘’The Sopranos” itself influences its audience. • Different views on the viewer’s perspective of Tony Soprano. • Tries to explain the reason why we could feel sympathy, or fascination towards the show.

  3. It was a Fascination • We do not have a pro attitude towards Tony Soprano, nor sympathy, its rather a Fascination. • Tony Soprano is in-between the ordinary and the exotic. ( Is a parent and at the same time involved in the Mafia) • Explains the excitement of the reader or viewer towards Tony Soprano’s Life. • The fact we are fascinated by Tony Soprano, does not mean we have a Pro attitude toward him. • The World of the Sopranos have different abnormalities which we have no sympathy for.

  4. Wish Fulfillment • One way to try to explain a pro attitude towards Tony Soprano, would be the fulfillment of his darkest wishes. • Tony's self control is simple, he eats, has sex, drinks, and does whatever he wants. • Has an affair • Manages to get away with his crimes.

  5. Identification • Most of the audience of the Sopranos, identifies itself with the attitude that Tony has towards life. • Towards his life choice, his family issues, his nephew, the whole character. • Tony’s attitude towards life is highly sympathetic to the audience’s ears. • Still, identification cannot explain our pro attitude towards the Sopranos.

  6. Paradox Solved • Tony seems relatively less violent and sadistic, and more judicious. ( apparently is the “fairest” of the gangsters) • Shows some compassion. • Tony does posses some positive moral characteristics. • Would never betray his own people. (agonizes over various loyalty conflicts that pull him to opposite sides.) • Tony is loyal to his friends and family, including his nephew who he enforces to a detox program. • Makes a serious effort in being a good parent and plan for a better life for his children. • Because he is the best of the worst, the pro attitude towards him.

  7. A Remaining Problem • Anyone could be outraged by Tony’s actions (crimes, racism and so on) , that’s why our sympathy and pro attitude towards him are highly limited. • There is a high disapproval for all the actions Tony does. • The immoral behavior Tony has, cannot be repeated be anyone, unless they were corrupt before watching the show.
