  2. 1 Thess. 5:12-28 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.

  3. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. Brothers, pray for us. Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Congregational responsibility toward the churches leadership (v. 12-13) “God has called and placed leaders within his church, pastors and elders to pastor and shepherd Christ’s people; and Christ has delegated to these pastors and elders the responsibility of oversight for his sheep.” James H Grant Jr. - They are laboring among you. - Their responsibility to shepherd - Christian leaders must admonish

  6. 2. Congregational Responsibility Toward Each Other (v. 14-15) 1. Admonish the idle 2. Encourage the fainthearted 3. Help the weak • Be patient with them all “Quick fixes seldom remedy deep faults” • Don’t repay evil for evil…seek to do good To be right doctrinally, but wrong relationally causes us to relate to each other sinfully.

Congregational Responsibility Toward Worship (v. 16-22) V. 16 – Rejoice always V. 17 – Pray without ceasing V. 18 – Give thanks in all circumstances V. 19 – Do not quench the Spirit V. 20,21 – Do not despise prophecies..test them V. 22 – Abstain from every form of evil Our response is not to despise the gifts of the Spirit, but to test all things, holding to what is true, and rejecting what is false.

  8. 4. Final Prayer and Assurance (23-28) A prayer for sanctification and security The God of Peace Sanctification Keeping Pray, greet and read Pray for your ministers Pray for each other Pray for gospel advancement All in the grace of God

  9. So What? 1. Live expecting the Lord to meet with us each week in worship. 2. Live expecting to grow in grace and holiness. 3. Live expecting the return of Christ at any time. A Fitting Benediction Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
