  10. Problem of Practice BNHS students are not performing at high levels of achievement in writing. • EOC Tests • SAT Writing • Classroom Evidence

  11. Theory • If teachers create and implement lessons for students so that they think, read, and write critically, then their writing will rise to higher levels. • If teachers use the Fundamental Five as a means of improving instruction, which includes critical writing opportunities and small group, purposeful talk, then students’ writing achievement will increase. • If students are given opportunities to use technology for research, collaboration, project creation and presentation, then achievement levels will increase.

  12. Guiding Questions • How are teachers using literacy charts in the classrooms to help guide their instruction? • What are the student responses to the guiding questions used for small group, purposeful talk? • What evidence supports students using creativity, collaboration, problem solving, and technology to produce products or discourse at levels of application or above? • How does the leadership team and teacher PLC’s support and monitor critical thinking and writing skills to ensure successful student growth?

  13. Critical Thinking • Define Critical Thinking. • Look at the handout on logical and independent thinking and focus on p. 121-122. • Look at your definition for Critical Thinking. Does it need to change? Do we have one definition we agree on as a campus? • Now with this knowledge, go back and read 119-120. Is critical thinking enough for our students to be college/career ready?
