  1. Welcome to Year 3!

  3. Class Information • Attendance • - We are hoping to win the 100% attendance award again so keep up the good work! • Punctuality and late marks • - Registers close at 9.00am. After this time children will be marked absent. • Water Bottles • - Children will not be allowed to use the water fountain during class time, if they need/want water in class they should bring in a water bottle.

  4. Class Information • P.E. in J1 will take place on a Wednesday (indoor) and a Thursday (outdoor) • PE Kits must remain in school and taken home every half term holiday to be washed. • On Thursdays, as it is outdoor PE, children can bring tracksuits and trainers, depending on the weather. These cannot be left in school, however, due to lack of space. We start PE in the first week of each half term, so please ensure that they are returned on the first day back. • Ties and buttons. • - Please help your child to be independent when changing for PE. • Class Motto – Always do your best!

  5. Transition into Year 3 • This is a typical day in J1. It takes a while for the children to get used to the routines and they can often be tired at first. • Morning: • 5 a day • 2 lessons before break (Literacy/Numeracy and an other subject) • Numeracy/Literacy before Lunch • Afternoon: • 2 lessons (No Break!) • These will be a mixture of Science/Humanities/R.E./Music/Spanish/PHSCE/Art/P.E./Reading activities/Handwriting • We have ICT on Wednesday morning. • Assembly is on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

  6. The Year 3 Curriculum

  7. Reading • All children will be given a home reading book. This may not be read in school each week, but should be read and dated at home by yourselves. • Books will be changed as and when the children finish them. • Children will complete guided reading sessions every week. These will concentrate on comprehension of the text as well as decoding new or unusual words. • Children who are not yet at the right level for guided reading will be heard once a week with their home reading book. • Children who are at the right level for guided reading will have their home readers monitored regularly but will do their weekly read in these group sessions. • Now that most children are able to read fluently, it is very important that you ask them questions about what they are reading, to ensure that they understand the text.

  8. Literacy and Maths Homework • Literacy will be given on a Wednesday along with spellings to learn. • This must be returned by the following Wednesday, when the spelling test will take place. • Homework may be linked to spellings , but sometimes a longer piece of writing or research will be required. • Maths will be given on a Friday to be returned by the following Friday. • This will take the form of a written worksheet or online activity accessed through the website www.mymaths.co.uk (Login: hrcps Password: square) • A tables test will also take place on a Friday. Details can be found in their table test books. • We may give additional online tasks which children will be encouraged to complete, accessed through the website www.educationcity.com. • We will inform children if they have online homework; however, please check the websites on a Friday.

  9. General Matters • If you wish to speak to the class teacher, please try not to approach them in the morning as they have thirty children to attend to. Instead, inform the office of any messages, or ask the office staff to make an appointment with the class teacher. Teachers will be also be available on the playground at the end of each school day. • When collecting your child after school, we would ask that you stand towards the back of the playground (by the bike sheds, garden etc) as it is often difficult for the younger children to see their parents. The children will be led onto the playground by their teacher/TA and the children are told that if they cannot see the person who is collecting them, they need to stand by their teacher.

  10. How you can help • Ensure completion of homework. • Read with your child regularly, even if only a few pages. • Encourage independent research. • Constant practice of the weekly times tables, as this will benefit their mathematical knowledge. • Regular practice of the weekly spellings. • Practise using time, e.g. reading digital and analogue clocks and durations of journeys, programmes etc. • Microsoft Office including Powerpoint as this will help their general ICT skills.
