Economy • Not very developed • Us and Canada have imposed an economic sanction • Historically main route between china and asia • Conquered by the British became wealthy • Once the largest exporter of rice • Used to produce a lot of teak • Govt imposed a policy of nationalization which greatly hurt the economy

  4. Geography • Borders Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal • Boarders Bangladesh China India Laos and Thailand • Tropical w/ hot humid summers and lower humidity during winter • Lowlands and rugged highlands • Petroleum, timber, tin, ect. • Threatened by earthquakes and cyclones

  5. Religion No official state religion Govt promotes Theravada Buddhism Muslims and Christians are sometimes persecuted

  6. Clothing Menusually wear collarless white shirts and overcoat longyi which is a piece of cloth. Women wear silk or cotton dresses. Not allowed to wear shorts. Wear skirts and longyis Usually wear traditional longyis with western shirts Wear light clothing because of the climate

  7. Government • Controlled by the military • Known to to have a presidential republic • A parliamentary government exists • Military prevents it from doing anything • Ruled as a british colony from 1885-1948

  11. Art and Literature Ten traditional arts known as the ten flowers. Which range from blacksmith to painting. Literature is influenced by India and Thailand. Language is influenced by Pali instead of sanscript. myanmabhasa is the name of the language. Monosyllabic with an emphasis on tone and pitch. Stone engravings are known as kyauksa.
