General Overview by the Numbers: • 14 McBurney scholarships for students with disabilities • 1 application to apply for any you are eligible to receive • 10 are open to any student with a disability • 4 have preferences: • Delta Gamma: Students with visual impairments: • Ridley: Students with visual, mobility or hearing loss • Newlin: Students with learning disability, AD/HD or autism • Wolozyn: Students with any disability who are music majors • 2 do NOT consider financial need: Ginsberg and WI Experience • $500 - $2500 is typical award range. • $89,000+ awarded this fall • 1 time scholarship awarded the following fall but can reapply each year

You are eligible for McBurney scholarships if you … • Are a current or incoming UW-Madison • Undergraduate • Graduate • Professional school student • You complete the scholarship application by the scholarship deadline • Two people submit recommendations for you by the scholarship application deadline • You verify your disability status with the McBurney Disability Resource Center by the scholarship deadline

What might qualify as a disability? • Psychological disability (depression, anxiety, etc.) - 996 • AD/HD - 582 • Health Condition (Chrohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, etc.) - 421 • Learning Disability -250 • Brain Injury -92 • Mobility/Physical Disability -73 • Hearing Loss - 58 • Autism Spectrum Disorder - 36 • Visual Disability (not corrected with glasses/contacts) - 34 • Temporary - 30 • Other – 50 • Total - 2622

  5. How do I verify my disability status? Go to mcburney.wisc.edu Click on “Apply for Accommodations” under the “Students” tab

Complete the 3 steps to apply for accommodations: Submit the McBurney Student Application (separate from the scholarship application) Complete an initial meeting with the access consultant mentioned in the email you will receive after submitting your McBurney Student Application Gather and submit disability documentation Complete these 3 steps before the scholarship deadline!

  8. How do I start a McBurney scholarship application: Step 2 Complete the General Application Answer “Yes” to the question asking if you would like to view scholarships for students with disabilities.

  9. Find McBurney Scholarship Application under “Other Recommended Opportunities” Click on the “Apply” button to start your McBurney Scholarship Application. NOTE: You will not see the McBurney application until the application opens, generally in early November.

  10. Other Important Steps: FAFSA Complete the FAFSA (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa)before the December 1 priority deadline for UW-Madison! No FAFSA by December 1 = 0 of 35 scoring points awarded for financial need International students: Complete the International Student - Financial Need Addendum by Dec. 1 Unusual financial costs not on FAFSA: Consider submitting those special circumstances to UW’s Financial Aid Office (https://financialaid.wisc.edu/) Click on “Applying” tab at top and scroll down near the bottom to “Special Circumstances/Appeals”

  11. Other Important Steps: Identify 2 Recommenders Ask two people to submit recommendations by the scholarship deadline. McBurney staff, family and friends cannot be recommenders. You will enter their names and email addresses on the scholarship application. Tell them to look for an email with a link. Recommendations not submitted by deadline = An incomplete application that will NOT be reviewed!

Other Optional Step: Co-Curricular Involvement Form Submit a “Co-Curricular Involvement Form” if you want to be considered for two scholarships that focus on co-curricular activities: WI Experience: $500 Ginsberg: $1000 No form = No consideration for those awards Link to form is on the scholarship application and McBurney’s scholarship web page.

  13. View Questions on Scholarship Application: Go to WiSH (https://wisc.academicworks.com/). Click “Show Filters”. Select McBurney from the dropdown. See list of all McBurney scholarships AND the McBurney Scholarship application itself.

Scoring Applications: 91 maximum points • Financial Need: 35 (FAFSA and financial need questions) • GPA: 20 • Impact of disability on learning, access to information and learning supports: 9 • Impact of disability of time available for learning: 9 • Non-disability impact on GPA: 3 • Explanation of Educational Plan / Career Goals: 3 • Explanation of Life Experiences and Personal Identity: 3 • Connection Between Educational Goals/Career Plan and Life Experiences/Personal Identity: 3 • Recommendations: 6
