  2. Basic Facts • Was founded in 1526 by Babur Located in present day India The most powerful Islamic state to rule India

  3. Expansion Victories in the south expanded the empire to more than 1.25 million square miles and ruled over more than 150 million people. The Empire extended from Bengal to Balochistan (east to west) and Kashmir (north) and Kaveri (south).

  4. Government The Mughal Empire had an absolute monarchy. The departments were: The Exchequer-Accounts and Salaries-Judiciary and Public Morals and there were officers assigned to each of them. The height of the Mughal Empire was filled with different art, trading, economy techniques, religions, languages and much more making it a very important empire.

  5. Religion Hinduism and Islam were the most practiced religions at the time of mughal empire. The empire was mostly made up of Hindu culture but was ruled by muslims, so it took a huge amount of effort to get the Hindus support. When Akbar became emperor, he then allowed freedom of religion.

  6. Social Aspects This period was thought of as prosperous. The social aspects of the Mughal Empire and India today relate by family life, religion, art, music, literature, and education. Women had a particular role in the empire: They could own land, participate in business transactions, and literary activities. Aristocratic women painted, wrote poetry, and played music because they received a higher education.

  7. Economy Agricultural economy was the base of the empire They relied heavily on wheat and rice The profit from agricultural trade went to the armies and the bureaucracies The columbian exchange brought change to the empire by introducing american crops.

  8. Cultural Developments Emperor Jahangir began building monuments and gardens by which the Mughals are chiefly remembered by today. Jahan, Jahangir’s successor, commissioned the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal took about 22 years to build. It was built to show the wealth and power of the empire
