  5. Most dental HCW’s are employed in a general dentistry practice. • What does this mean?

  6. Specialty areas of dentistry • Endodontics • Orthodontics • Pedodontics • Periodontics • Prosthodontics

  7. Levels of workers in dentistry • Dentist • Dental hygienist • Dental lab tech. • Dental assistant

  8. Dentist • DMD or DDS • Doctors who examine, diagnose and treat diseases of the teeth and mouth. TED • They supervise the work of other dental HCW’s. • Most are entrepreneurs.

  9. Dental Hygienist • DH • Works under the supervision of the dentist. • Performs preliminary exams • Removes stains and deposits from the teeth • Takes x-rays of the mouth • Gives preventive treatments

  10. Dental Lab Technician • DLT • Makes and repairs dental prostheses. False teeth, caps, crowns and bridges • Works under written orders from the dentist

  11. Dental Assistant • DA • Works under the supervision of the dentist. • Escorts the patient to the exam room. • Passes instruments and prepares dental trays. • Takes x-rays and sterilizes instruments. • Receptionist duties!!!!!!!

  12. Salary Ranges • Dentist – up to $200,000 • Dental Assistant- up to $31,000 These are only estimates!!!
