  1. Status of Fertilizer Industry Wilma N. Obcemea Ph. D. Chief, Fertilizer Regulatory Division

  2. FPA is mandated under PD 1144 on 30 May 1977 • Assure an adequate supply of fertilizers and pesticides at reasonable prices, • Rationalize the manufacture and marketing of fertilizers • Protect the public from the risks inherent in the use of pesticides • educate the agricultural sector in the use of these inputs

  3. Major Activities • registration and licensing • clean-up drive • field monitoring • product quality control • product stewardship training • rapid composting technology transfer • plant health clinic • crop protection hotline • Close coordination with international organizations

  19. Country of Origin of Fertilizer Imports Raw Materials

  20. Issues and concerns Spiralling price of fertilizer particularly urea because it is an oil-based commodity. Freight cost is less if the source is near the Philippines e.g. China is now producing urea, though Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan are fertilizer exporters. Government encourages the manufacture of organic fertilizer and biofertilizers (Bio N, Vital N etc.) to augment the supply of inorganic as well as to recycle the nutrients to sustain soil fertility and crop production.

  21. YIELD OF CORN (t/ha)

  22. Yield of Corn (t/ha) 2005 WS Super Sweet, UPLB a. Seed Coating at 200 g / 3 kg seed

  23. Yield of Rice (t/ha) Rc 18, 2005 WS UPLB a. Seed Coating as radicles come out before dapog at 200g / 20 kg seed

  24. Yield of Corna (t/ha) a. Adapter from Dr. R. Davide, WS 2000, Barili, Cebu

  25. Relative Number of Atoms of Essential Nutrients in Plants for Normal Growth Relative number of atoms of the essential elements in alfalfa at bloom stage, expressed logarithmically. Note that there are more than 10-million hydrogen atoms for each molybdenum atom. Even so, normal plant growth would not occur without molybdenum. Cobalt is generally present in even smaller quantities in plants than is molybdenum. [Modified from Viets.]

  26. Using BIO-N for Corn • Place seeds in a suitable container and moisten with water. • 2. Pour sufficient amount of inoculants.

  27. 2. Mix thoroughly until the seeds are evenly coated. Note: A drop or 2 of sticker may be mixed with water to enhance adsorption of BIO-N on the seeds.

  28. 3. Sow coated seeds immediately.

  29. SUMMARY • Bio-N increases yield of rice and corn • It replaces 30-50% of Recommended Rate (RR) of • inorganic fertilizer as supplement for • nitrogen requirement of the crop • Bio-N can increase yield with basal organic • fertilizer
