  3. Best Practices Proper tire inflation No excess load End-of-Life 1 psi drop in tire air pressure = 1-2% rolling resistance increase Less weight = lower rolling resistance Scrap markets, not landfills!!! 3

  4. Tire Energy Use • 1/3 lost due to rolling resistance • Inflation and LRR tires reduce rolling resistance • 10% less rolling resistance = 1-2% better fuel economy 4

  5. Low Rolling Resistance (LRR) Tires • New cars sold with LRR tires • LRR replacement tires difficult to find • Rolling Resistance Coefficient (RRC) • Specify SAE J1269, <0.01 5

  6. Retreads • Retread tires save five gallons of oil per tire • Millions of gallons could be saved annually if light-duty vehicles used more retreads 6

  7. Retread Tires • Bad tread does not mean bad casing • Retread method similar to new tire manufacturing • Ensure quality (e.g., federal spec ZZ-T-441H) 7

  8. Wheel Weights Each tire has wheel weight (Pb) 4.5 oz per vehicle 2,000 tons of lead wheel weights fall off tires each year Abrade into particles polluting water and air 8

  9. Wheel Weights • By 2009, most new vehicles will have steel or zinc weights • Lead weights – BAD • Zinc weights – Good • Steel weights - BEST • Specify for steel weights in replacement market • Visit www.LeadFreeWheels.org 9
