Cardio and weights

Cardio and weights are an unholy combination. Everyone knows that. If you do too much weightlifting, it gets hard to run because you weigh too much. If you do too much running, you lose all those sweet strength and size gains you got from all that weightlifting. Best to stick with one and leave the other alone.

  2. Cardio and weights are an unholy combination. Everyone knows that. If you do too much weightlifting, it gets hard to run because you weigh too much. If you do too much running, you lose all those sweet strength and size gains you got from all that weightlifting. Best to stick with one and leave the other alone. Kind of, anyway. While it can be true that mixing cardio and weightlifting isn’t good for certain groups of people, for the vast majority of us it’s just fine. Professional powerlifters may not want to sacrifice their strength to run, and pro runners don’t want to get too heavy and slow down. Unless you fall in one of those two groups, it’s important to do both to improve your fitness as much as possible. Strength and stamina are equally important to everyday life, and when it comes right down to it, that is what most training is for, to improve a person’s ability to do the things that life requires of them.

  3. Let’s use weight loss as an example. The vast majority of people that want personal training want to lose weight at some point or another. Both weightlifting and cardio play a role in burning calories and cutting fat, but in different ways. The most traditional way to lose weight, by doing lots of cardio, is effective because a session of HIIT or a run can burn more calories than a session of weightlifting can. However, weightlifting increases your muscle mass and muscle density, which increases your metabolism and burns more calories while you are at rest. Therefore, doing both cardio and weightlifting is going to be best for losing weight quickly. Not to mention it will prepare you for helping your friend move both by giving you the strength to lift the couch and the stamina to carry it up the stairs.
