Biography • Born in 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland • Family left him at early age • In 1742, he moved to Paris and earned his living doing various jobs • Studied mostly in Paris • Wrote many famous essays and books in his lifetime • Discourse on the Sciences and Arts(1750) • Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men (1755) • The Social Contract (1762)

Philosophical Ideas • People could govern themselves, by forming an agreement among themselves and submitting some on their rights to the government in exchange for a protection of these rights • Humankind is naturally good • They have a natural drive, called amour de soi • Humans are born good, but it is society that corrupts them
