  2. Introduction • Goal: a. Do research on the history of social networking b. Compare the features of some of the past popular social networking sites c. Predict what the next generation’s social networking sites • Sources: Computer History museum, Internet forum, IEEE paper

First E-mail (1971) • The ARPANET (“Advanced Research Projects Agency Network”) emerged as the first larger networks. • SNDMSG = program deliver message by appending to a file on the same computer • CPYNET = file transfer program which writes and reads files on remote compute • Ray Tomlinson SNDMSG + CPYNET = EMAIL

  4. BBS (1978) • Bulletin Board System (BBS) is a computer application dedicated to the sharing or exchange simple messages on a network • The primary online community before WWW • Text based, accessible by Telnet

  5. USENET (1980) • Worldwide distributed Internet discussion system • Users read and post messages to 1 or more categories (newsgroups) • Resembles BBS and Internet forum

  6. Early social networking • GeoCities (1994): a. Users create their own web sites categorized by one of six cities b. Computer Silicon Valley Entertainment Hollywood • theGlobe.com (1995): a. Going public in 1998 posting the largest 1st day gain of IPO in history up to that date ( 606% increase of initial share) b. Fell from 850 million to 4million or less in 3 years

  7. SixDegrees.com (1997): a. Based on “Web of Contacts” model b. Named after the “six degrees of separation” concept and allowed users to list friends c. Users could send message to their first 3 degrees • Friendster(2002): a. Become a social gaming site in June, 2011 b. Popular in Southeast Asia

  8. Social Networking today • Myspace (2003): a. 2005 -2008 most visited social networking sites b. June, 2006 surpassed Google as the most visited sites in US c. June 2009 1600 employee June 2011 200 workers • My Space is sold to Specific Media and Justin Timberlake in 2011

  9. Facebook (2004): a. Originally as a way to connect college students b. First launched at Harvard University • Twitter (2006): a. Users send and read text-based post of up to 140 characters known as tweets b. Over 200 million tweets per day
