  2. Why? • Would be nice to understand “human genomic diversity, encompassing all types of variation beyond common single-nucleotide variants.”(1) • “mapping full genomes, scientists argue, is the key to individualized genetic information”(2)

As of march 2010(2) • Knome $99,000 for whole genome • Illumina,Inc. announced sequencer that takes 1 week and $10,000per genome • HelicoseBioSciences mapped scientist Stephen Quake’s genome for $50,000. • Other players include • Applied Biosystems • 454 Life Sciences (a Roche company) • Complete Genomics • Pacific Biosciences • Ion Torrent Systems • Has a pH chip that can sequence “hundreds of millions of base pairs for $500”

As of August 2010(3) • “ABI's SOLiD 4 platform has been said to generate a $6,000 genome, and the SOLiD 4 hq upgrade is planned for this fall with a target of delivering a $3,000 genome, Robison says” • Illumina’s ”HiSeq is supposedly at a $10,000 genome already” • “IonTorrent may only be two years away” • Complete Genomics • Life Technologies

  5. Factors for winner • Not necessarily the first product who’s materials cost is <=$1k • Accuracy • Equipment Cost • Maintenance • Training Required (foolproofing, even) • If inflation increases fast enough, and the cost lowers slow enough, it may prevent the cost from ever reaching $1k.

  6. Potential for (ab)use • Insurance companies • Employers • Criminal Justice Systems • Info Brokers • Medical Professionals • Drug Companies
