  2. English 10 Do Now (1-14-13) • Make a list of any details you know about Martin Luther King Jr.

  3. Letter from Birmingham Jail • Did you know King was arrested, several times actually? • One time he was arrested for standing up to an immoral law, and the white ministers in the area criticized him, saying he had poor timing. • King came back at them in the piece we will read this week.

  4. Monday: background • http://youtu.be/5K5XlCSUs6k • Begin reading, learn how to annotate together • HW: Annotate the next paragraph from where we leave off today. • Tuesday: class read and annotate • HW: Finish reading and annotating • Wednesday: Group work (MUST BE PRESENT!)

  5. English 10 Do Now (1-15-13) • How would you describe MLK’s tone so far? Cite a couple examples of his word choices that support your claim.

  6. English 10 Do Now (1-16-13) • Look over your annotations (specifically the !, ?, ?? Marks). Write out two things to share with the class. They can be parts you were confused about (??), parts you want to discuss (?) or parts you loved (!) • Then skip a space and write what you think Kings’ central or main idea is.

  7. English 10 Do Now (1-17-13) • In one to two sentences, write out what you think is the main idea of MLK’s letter.

  8. Group Presentation • You will be assigned one aspect of the letter to analyze. Your group will create one PowerPoint slide with your findings which you will share with the class

  9. Group Presentations • Slide must: • Explain the aspect of the text you explored • Identify a selected quote or passage from the reading which demonstrates your focus (i.e. Tone, Imagery, etc.) • Explain your group’s decision on what MLK’s main idea is • A related image (for E.C.)

  10. English 10: Do Now (1-22-13) • Today you are finishing your slide while also working on your blog draft. Write down the following information: • Write a 250 word essay in which you state what MLK’s main point is in his letter as well as explain why you think it was powerful and persuasive. You will need evidence to back up your claims.

  11. Helpful starters • Sample thesis statement frame: • MLK’s main idea in “Letter from Birmingham Jail is _________. MLK uses (pick which elements/aspects you want to discuss: i.e. tone, imagery, appeals, etc.) to create a powerful and persuasive argument.

  12. English 10: Do Now (1-23-13) • Please read the two handouts for today. One explains how to write your response to MLK’s letter. The other explains how to sign up for Edmodo where we will be blogging. • Today we will have our groups present, so pay attention because they are going to give you the info you need for your blog

  13. English 10 Do Now 1-24-13 • By now you should have a good idea of what you think the main idea of the letter is. You also have some info about how the letter was persuasive. Write out in sentence form the thesis statement you are thinking about using for your essay 5
