Unit 2 Key Terms with definitions Culture: the beliefs, customs, practices, and social behavior of a particular nation or people Subculture: a group of people within a culture that differentiates themselves from the larger culture Cuisine:the range of food prepared by a restaurant, country, or person Distinctive: uniquely characteristic of a person, group, or thing Diversity: ethnic variety, as well as socioeconomic and gender variety, in a group, society, or institution Multiculturalism: relating to, consisting of, or participating in the cultures of different countries, ethnic groups, or religions Impartial: having no direct involvement or interest and not favoring one person or side more than another Demographics: the characteristics of a human population or part of it, especially its size, growth, density, distribution, and statistics regarding birth, marriage, disease, and death

  7. Culture • Culture is the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

  8. Subculture • A group having social, economic, ethnic, or other traits distinctive enough to distinguish it from others within the same culture or society. • Gamers • Hiphop • Skater • Jocks

  9. Diversity • The state of being diverse; variety. • A range of different things. What makes you different from me? What makes her different from him? What makes us different from them?

  11. Bad Relations The Problem: • Poor relations between community members and law enforcement officers can lead to feelings of distrust, anger and fear. Today it is easy for citizens to think law enforcement agencies have unfair policies and for peace officers to feel unfairly blamed for social problems and underappreciated for the work they accomplish. There are four key aspects to this dilemma: • Race, culture and class background • Rapidly changing demographics • Community history and politics • The Culture of law enforcement work itself

Solution! • Building trust and partnerships with culturally diverse communities through respect, dialogue, cooperation, appropriate and effective consultation and communication; • Reducing crime and violence and the community’s fear of crime • Building a committed and confident workforce by recruiting and retaining the right people, and fully developing the talents of people we have by providing career and development opportunities as well as reward and recognition for competent practices.

  15. What is the definition of conflict? • A disagreement through which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns.

  16. Why do people dislike police? • Police say “NO” • Police tell us we are WRONG • Police enforce RULES • Police are AUTHORITY • Think about your parents and how you view them as figures of authority. Do you respect them? Do you ridicule them? Even if they were truly deficient, can you remember ways in which they tried to exert a positive influence? Threaten our NEEDS!

What are some effective conflict resolution techniques? • Re-evaluate what you need. • Listen to the needs of the other party(s). • Attack the problem, compliment the person. • Verbal Judo: • Be polite, professional, calm • State your needs • Explain your needs • Let them get mad, while you get results

Scenario Guidelines • Groups of 4 or less. • No violence or vulgar language. • Your scenario must include: • Characters (Names, Personalities) • A beginning, middle, and end (Show your knowledge of conflict resolution) • A written dialogue that I can read. • An explanation of the conflict and the solution.

  22. Options for a solution • Arrest • Separate • Recommend Counseling • Advise parties on the civil courts process • DO NOT TRY TO MAKE ANYONE APOLOGIZE, SHAKE HANDS, ETC…. YOU ARE NOT A KIDNIGARTEN TEACHER.
