  2. What is Internet Safety? • Web safety, or online safety or Internet Safety, is the knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-protection from computer crime in general.

  3. Why Internet Safety • 95% of students use the internet. • The internet has changed the world in multiple ways. Students can access knowledge, games, tools, creativity, social interactions, news, etc. all through being online. • The internet is a amazing tool for the world but it does come with some negatives. • Cyberbullying • Exposure to inappropriate material • Online predators • Revealing too much personal information  • Learning tips and tricks of internet safety throughout this lesson you will be able to use the internet in a safer manor.

  4. Online Chatting/Messaging Safety Tips • Don’t add people you don’t know! • Don’t share your username and password with anyone! It belongs to you and only you! • Never give out personal information: • Full Name • Birth Date • Home Address • Phone Number • ALWAYS KEEP PERSONAL INFORMATION PRIVATE

  5. Internet Chatting/Messaging • Don’t tell internet “friends” who you are or how to find you. DON’T SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION. • When you share personal information with someone on the other end, they might use what you tell them in ways you don’t want them to.

Internet’s memory • The internet is very massive and it keeps records of everything! • The computer keeps memory of items you delete too! • Embarrassing or Risqué pictures • Rude or Mean comments • Illegal activities • Watch what you post about yourself because you might have to live with it for a long, long time!

  7. Social Networking: Facebook, Skype, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Etc… • Only add people you know! • You honestly don’t know who is on the other end when your on the internet. • Your internet “friend” may be anyone at all • Limit your personal information • Only appropriate pictures and videos • Make your profile private unless you are friends! • These websites are all a part of your digital footprint.

Cell Phones • Cell Phones are too a way to access the internet and chatting! • Do not send pictures through texts, there is no such thing as privacy! • Same applies for chatting: • Do not give out to much personal information! • If you take a picture and upload it online anyone can find out where and when your picture was taken by one click! Inappropriate Messages • If you see an inappropriate website or someone sends you a message that that makes you feel uncomfortable, help protect other students by reporting this to your teacher. • NEVER RESPOND to obscene, hateful, or threatening messages. Save the message and then tell an adult. Responding can make the situation worse.

  10. Remember… • Everything on the internet can be recorded or saved, even if you delete it! Be sure to protect yourself and limit what you post online or what you send to people! • Protect Yourself and Your Safety! • Don’t do anything online that you wouldn’t do offline. • Don’t write mean emails • Don’t hack computers or accounts of other people • Don’t illegally download music • Don’t make threats • Remember on the internet people are strangers no matter who well you think you have gotten to know them. • If you follow these few simple tips you will be able to have a much safer and happier experience online!

School Rules • Don’t assume you have a right to privacy on the internet at school, you don’t. • Our internet filter has it’s limitations, always report inappropriate sites that may come up. • By-passing the filter at school is NOT allowed. • Internet bullying of others is not allowed at school or at home. • Students should not download music or videos to the computer. This uses up bandwidth that students need for legitimate school related issues.

What is Cyberbullying? • Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. • Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5PZ_Bh-M6o

  16. Why is Cyberbullying Different? • Kids who are being cyberbullied are often bullied in person as well. Additionally, kids who are cyberbullied have a harder time getting away from the behavior. • Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach a kid even when he or she is alone. It can happen any time of the day or night. • Cyberbullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It can be difficult and sometimes impossible to trace the source. • Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts, and pictures is extremely difficult after they have been posted or sent.

Facts • Over 40% of students with internet access have been the victim of a cyberbully. • Girls are more likely to be the target of cyberbullies than boys. • Only 10% of victims tell their parents. • The most common tools for a cyberbully are chat rooms, social networking sites, email and instant messaging. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuH9vVhDfsU

Bullying vs. Cyberbullying • Cyberbullying, like other forms of bullying, is about power and control. • Those who bully want to make their victims feel that there is something wrong with them. • It is a particularly cowardly form of bullying in that cyberbullies often act anonymously. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9jIW4gjxwc

Effects of Cyberbullying • Victims may feel depressed, scared, and stressed. • Victims may become paranoid and think everyone is out to get them. • Victims may lose the ability to concentrate at school and grades may fall. • In some instances violence and/or suicide has been the result of cyberbullying.

  21. How can I protect myself? • Don’t post personal information online. • Avoid escalating the situation. Don’t respond to harassment. • Document cyberbullying.   22. Follow These Rules • Stop!–Calm down, don’t respond. • Block!–Block the bully and/or limit communications to people on your buddy list. • And Tell!–Tell a trusted adult, (a teacher, parent or law enforcement official). • You can also report cyberbullying to wiredsafety.org
