  1. In-Text Citations with RefWorks UTSPH Library Fall 2006 Semester

  2. Objectives • Learn how to use one line/cite view in RW • Learn what to look for in your bibliography

  3. Writing Your Paper Write your paper as usual, but be sure to have RefWorks open. When you are ready to cite an article, use <Alt>Tab to switch to RW.

  4. RW One line/Cite view Switch to One line/Cite View. What’s this? Select the folder with the citations you need to cite.

  5. One line/Cite View Click on the work Cite next to the item you want. In the pop up window, highlight the text, then copy it and Clear the text. Go back to your paper.

  6. Insert Citation into Paper Paste the citation into the paper. Never mind that it does not look like a real citation at this point. That will be fixed later!

  7. Creating the Bibliography Click Bibliography on the Tool Bar in RefWorks.

  8. Creating a Bibliography Click Bibliography on the Tool Bar in RefWorks and select a format. Rule of thumb: Health promotion/behavioral sciences use APA; epidemiology and many others can use Uniform.

  9. Creating a Bibliography Click Browseto locate your paper to upload.

  10. Creating a Bibliography Find your paper, select it, then click Open.

  11. Creating a Bibliography Click Create Bibliography and hold down the <Ctrl> key so the file will open.

  12. Creating a Bibliography Choose Open.

  13. Final Product RW converts the funny looking citations with the {{brackets}} into the proper format, in this case a number with parenthesis. (9)

  14. End of Paper References Reference will appear at the end of the paper, just as they should in the format you selected.

  15. Things to Look For Citations are sometimes imported from Ovid Medline with text that is not part of the original. Go back to RW and fix it there using the Edit function. If you notice any misspellings (maybe you manually added a citation), fix it in RefWorks then re-run your bibliography!

  16. Things to Look For RW also doesn’t “know” how to discern proper names when they are part of a title. You can’t fix this at the RW– chances are the word “French” is capitalized. You will have to manually fix proper names in the final paper.

  17. Final Thoughts • Save the paper with the funny brackets • The final paper can always be recreated! • Make major changes in paper with funny brackets • Make only minor changes in final paper

  18. Final Thoughts • Fix typos in RefWorks, then recreate your bibliography • Always save the paper with the funny brackets • You cannot add citations to final paper!

  19. Final Thoughts • Do not delete the paper with the funny brackets • You need it. Really- we’re serious. • Make editorial changes in the paper with the funny brackets only.
